Fidoodlin'(more) »rank: 204604by: Spade Cooley
:Album Description:In 1959, Spade Cooley, fresh from conquering the newfangled television medium with his Saturday night show on KTLA in Los Angeles, took his band into the studio to record an album for the Roulette label. Little did he know that it would be his last; Spade’s subsequent murder of his wife two years later marks the most spectacular and horrific flame-out of any artist in the annals of pop music. Ironically, though, this album was something of a return to form; after flirting with pop on his ’50s recordings for RCA, here Spade serves up 14 sides of hot Western Swing with ... |

The Merle Travis Story: 24 Greatest Hits(more) »rank: 40533by: Merle Travis
: :From the track listing, CMH's 1979 collection would appear to be the definitive, single-disc Travis set. Virtually all the major compositions and hits are here, and at 24 cuts, the offering is generous. But these are late-period recordings, tracked over two days in New Mexico, just four years before Travis's death. Travis coproduced the sessions, and the results, if never equal to his classic Capitol sides from the '40s and '50s, are still well worth hearing. At 62 years old, Travis could still pick with agility and grace, and his electric and acoustic runs show the joy he must have felt revisiting his ... |

Brisbane Bop(more) »rank: 179306by: Jimmie Rivers
: :Jimmie Rivers was the leader of a late-'50s/early-'60s eight-man house band at a Brisbane, California, nightclub called DeMarco's 23 Club. There, when they weren't backing the likes of Lefty Frizzell and Ernest Tubb, Rivers and the boys indulged their own Western swing whims. Brisbane Bop captures those flights of fancy, and it's a revelation. Rivers was a sophisticated, fleet-fingered player with a love for Charlie Christian and Barney Kessel, and eclectic taste in material that encompassed everything from pop standards to the odd Art Pepper cover. Brisbane Bop is culled from informal recordings made by steel guitarist Vance Terry. While they're not clean ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
