Total Yodel!(more) »rank: 31911by: Wylie & the Wild West Show
: :While his first Rounder release covered ground from honky tonk to Western swing to cowboy, Wylie Gustafson stays firmly on the dusty trail on his inviting, uplifting follow-up. Although the album is bookended by two upbeat Wylie originals, most of the record owns a relaxed, lonesome-prairie mood. His exhilarating yodels---which move from baritone to falsetto in effortless fashion---are tastefully supported by exquisite fills from guitarist Mark Thornton and steel player Carco Clave. Along the way he visits three Jimmie Rodgers tunes (including the lesser-known 'When the Cactus Is in Bloom') along with songs associated with the Sons of the Pioneers and Elton Britt, ... |

Ghost Train(more) »rank: 29425by: Hot Club of Cowtown
:Album Description:Ghost Train is a significant artistic step forward for The Hot Club of Cowtown. Original songs now dominate, and their sound (once described as a hybrid of Bob Wills and Django Reinhardt) is now more complex and much more unique to these extraordinary musicians. Hightone Records. 2002. :Swing, à la Django Reinhardt and Bob Wills, is the jazz that even jazz haters can love. Its bouncy energy appeals to one and all, and in concert, the Hot Club of Cowtown are among the finest purveyors of the style. As players, they have absorbed all the lessons of their heroes; however, as songwriters, ... |

Dedicated to You(more) »rank: 159497by: Big Sandy
: :Best known as the leader of Los Angeles's premier Western-swing revivalist group the Fly Rite Boys, Big Sandy takes a solo turn on Dedicated to You. Focusing on doo-wop and R&B--specifically sounds cut in the late '50s and early '60s by groups such as the Coasters, Platters, and Southern California's the Calvanes, who provide backup harmonies here--Sandy (a.k.a. Robert Williams) cruises through these vintage tracks with joy and enthusiasm, often sounding much like Frankie Lymon, especially on 'Lonely Guy.' 'I'm Leavin' It All Up to You' is a smooth duet with Dewey Terry, who originally recorded the song for Specialty Records as one ... |

Marie opens the show with an outdoor rendition of "We Need a Little Christmas" and then moves into the studio where Kirk Cameron arrives on a snowmobile (fresh from rescuing a trio of blonde snow bunnies) to read "The First Christmas Story." Lee Greenwood performs "Christmas to Christmas" and later a duet with Marie. "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" is sung by Sally Struthers and daughter with help from the Osmond Boys--six stepping stones ages 4 to 12 who have the senior Osmonds' moves down pat. The adorable award, though, goes to Marie's 5-year-old son, Steven, who performs a rockin' version of "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" (clapping on the off-beat nearly the whole song).
Marie has a good, strong voice, but many of the songs are overproduced and melodramatic. This, most likely, is a product of the big, pouffy '80s (her hair and outfits are also bigger-than-life) rather than a reflection of her talents. The closing number, "O Holy Night," sung by Marie alone, is quite lovely. --Dana Van Nest
