Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Expert musicianship, a diverse repertoire, and an active sense of humor become an explosive mixture in the hands of the Airmen. Recorded during a 1976 tour of England, Live One shows the genre-twisting band in all its maniacal glory. Western swing standards, rockabilly romps, R&B chestnuts, and a rash of truck-driving songs all find their way into the potent blend, not to mention their offbeat, drug-addled originals. Bill Kirchen's nifty guitar work, Andy Stein's punchy fiddle, and Bobby Black's pedal-steel forays provide the meat: no matter how goofy it gets, their formidable musical chops keep it all together. --Marc Greilsamer

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Swingin', dandin' rock and boogie woogie ...
Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen were one of the leading small venue bands that played rock with a mix of Texas Swing style, along with boogie woogie and other dancin' beats. This is one of their most outstanding efforts. The band's live albums are their best, as the studio works do not capture the party atmosphere with which the band played. This reviewer has nearly all of the band's tunes, either on vinyl recordings or on CD and considers this one to be among the two best, the other being another live recording, Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas. The selection of tunes in this recording includes some of the band's best known works. Their version of Smoke, Smoke, Smoke (that cigarette)! by Merle Travis became an exceptionally popular recording on radio, especially on college radio stations. The band originally came from Michigan, founded by George Frayne (Cody -- the piano player). They moved their locus of activity to the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 1970's, and played exceptionally frequently in the local bars surrounding local college campuses. Enjoy this one -- it's one of the best!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Commander Cody, We Got A Live One Here ! ...
Fantastic fun swang rock. These guys were the hilt in the day.I saw them live in Phoenix,Arizona about 1979 and they tore the place up and left everyone just devastated and ripped. Most people had to crawl out of there.I have seen over 50 groups in the late 70's early 80's and by far these guys put on the best show I have ever seen.If your a trucker over 50 , you probably should buy this.If you are younger...sorry ...you missed out on history but thanks to Amazon, here is a piece of it.Enjoy ! !

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * A classic! ...
I listened to the Commander all thru college. Listening again brought back great memories. Simply one heck of a fun album - classic country rock and roll. Not dinner music, but you can't beat it with a beer in one hand and pool cue in the other.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * get it going ...
if you need to get a party going, put on this cd. i guarantee you everyone will be dancing before it's done.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Rockin' That Boogie ...
Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen are a tremendously entertaining band, so it follows that the live version of one of their shows is going to be a lot of fun. This album does not disappoint in any way; the ad-libs in their stage show are funny, the country and western swing music is excellent and the narration between the songs is very entertaining. Although the show took place more than thirty years ago, the songs still sound fresh, and the CD is still well worth the price.

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon
