12 X 5(more) »rank: 662168by: The Rolling Stones
: :The best of the Stones' first three albums of hopped-up R&B, 12 x 5 hints at why there was more to this quintet than to blues-reviving brothers like the Yardbirds and the Animals. From the opening version of Chuck Berry's 'Around and Around,' Mick Jagger sings with a charismatic mixture of sexuality and menace. Even as a teenager--he actually looks alive in the 1964 album sleeve photo--Keith Richards shows a rare bluesman's confidence. It's unclear why covers of 'Time Is on My Side' and 'It's All Over Now' have become classic hits while the equally great 'Susie Q' remains obscure. --Steve Knopper |

Farmhouse(more) »rank: 1001415by: Phish
: :Filled with pretty melodies, delicate strumming, and concise, focused, melodic tunes, Phish's eighth studio record marks a bit of a departure from the norm, but not as much of a departure as many might think. For one thing, 1996's Billy Breathes moved in a similar direction--to the delight of casual fans and the dismay of many Phish fanatics. For another, even at their most frenetic and far-reaching, the band has always shown a keen pop sensibility, even if it was merely a chance to catch their breath. Make no mistake: most of the songs on Farmhouse are wonderfully, irresistibly catchy, and often quite ... |

Latter Days: Best of Led Zeppelin, Vol.2(more) »rank: 568542by: Led Zeppelin
: :The glory days of Led Zeppelin are chronicled comprehensively in Atlantic Record's 1999 Early Days best-of set, which leaves this '73-to-'79 package shorter on obvious crowd-pleasers. Still, this secondary set shows just how powerful Zeppelin were at their zenith. Taken from the band's final four albums, the songs here--'No Quarter,' 'Houses of the Holy,' and 'Song Remains the Same' among them--brought audiences to their feet in stadiums across the world while the Zeppelin juggernaut trampled their competition underfoot. Zeppelin defined hard rock, but were also capable of a delicacy that's easy to overlook; indeed, that dimension is missing from the picture of Zep ... |

An American Prayer(more) »rank: 594535by: Jim Morrison
: :The Doors recorded six studio albums with Jim Morrison as their singer from 1967 to 1971, hitting the charts with a series of pop songs that were at least as good as Tommy James and the Shondells. On their albums, they indulged in Morrison's pretentious obsessions that included extended pieces about Oedipal complexes and the end of the world. Those obsessions have been exaggerated by The Doors myth that continues to this day. This is a collection of Morrison's poetry, embellished by the surviving Doors several years after the fact. That the live rendition of 'Roadhouse Blues' is the only noteworthy selection should ... |

Their Satanic Majesties Request(more) »rank: 945373by: The Rolling Stones
: :Clearly their answer to Sgt. Pepper, or at least 'All You Need is Love,' Satanic Majesties is actually as sloppy an artifact as Flowers. But even at their most (willfully?) goofy '60s moment, the Stones came up with some good songs. 'She's a Rainbow' is fine second- tier pop-psychedelia, while '2000 Light Years From Home' can still transmit a pretty handsome case of the Fear. Bill Wyman's 'In Another Land' is as thin as his phased vocal, but still plays better than 'Sing This All Together (See What Happens).' Not the most essential Stones disc by a long shot, but one that fans ... |
