Blood on the Tracks(more) »rank: 17348by: Bob Dylan
:Album Description:Japanese remastered reissue packaged in a limited edition miniature LP sleeve. CBS/Sony. 2004. essential recording:Inevitably, when critics praise a new Dylan album, they label it the 'best since Blood on the Tracks,' and with good reason. Inspired by a crumbled marriage, and recorded after a tour with The Band had apparently re-ignited his creativity, Blood is among Dylan's masterpieces. The album's epic songs are well known, but its real high points are the shorter numbers--'You're a Big Girl Now,' the flawless blues 'Meet Me in the Morning,' and the sweetly devastating 'Buckets of Rain.' These are songs of 'images and distorted ... |

I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING(more) »rank: 10510by: BRIGHT EYES
:Album Description:Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst continues to earn his reputation as our most respected young troubadour with almost frightening ease. For the past few years he's been tagged 'rock's boy genius' by the music press. These albums are a soundly articulated slice of modern life rolled into two very different records, both bursting with all the heartfelt poetry for which Bright Eyes' records have earned their acclaim. Of course, the rough edges haven't gone away - the palpitation of a splintering note, the crack of a voice as it overextends, the clumsy thump of a misplaced thumb. It's all still there. But there's ... |

Is This It(more) »rank: 16496by: The Strokes
: 's Best of 2001:With all the media hype that dogged the Strokes before the release of their debut album, it's rather apt that they chose the title Is This It. On the strength of just five songs released on two singles, the Strokes were being hailed as everything from the saviors of rock & roll to the Savior himself. Surely, few bands could live up to the impossibly high standards set for this young five-piece, but the band needn't have worried: Is This It is one of the most exciting and energetic debut albums to spring from New York's long-dormant club scene. In ... |

OH, INVERTED WORLD [Vinyl](more) »rank: 12248by: THE SHINS
:Album Description:Hailing from Albuquerque, NM, The Shins sprung from the ashes of Flake/Flakemusic in 1997 (though those previous incarnations date back nearly a decade) - same members, different instruments, different approach. Counterpoint guitars have given way to a single guitar pitted against calculated keyboard passages; swarming indie rock machinations led to pop-based melodic endeavors. 's Best of 2001:Something extraordinary is afoot in Albuquerque. The Shins' first big-time record, Oh, Inverted World, combines mysterious narratives with golden song structures, resulting in lavish and opulent indie pop. Touches of Neutral Milk Hotel's lyrical majesty and the nostalgic swirl of Echo and the Bunnymen abound. But ... |

The Immaculate Collection(more) »rank: 20175by: Madonna
: essential recording:The naughtily titled Immaculate Collection culls 15 of Madonna's Top 10 singles from 1984 to mid-'90, plus 2 new ones that continued the run (the dirty, trunk-bumping funk of 'Justify My Love'--a Lenny Kravitz production that justifies his entire career--and the danceable desperation of 'Rescue Me'). Rooted in disco and classic AM pop from girl groups and ABBA to Strawberry Alarm Clock, Madonna made savvy, touching music throughout her first golden era. These tracks retain their sonic and historical significance while, like 'She Loves You' or 'Rocket Man,' still brightening any space they're being played in. Far more than just a ... |

Raw Power(more) »rank: 86297by: Iggy & the Stooges
:Album Description:Please disregard the Amazon editorial review, this LP uses the original 1973 Columbia Records mix, NOT the 1997 Iggy Pop remaster. If there's ever been an album that lives up to its title, this is it--Iggy and the Stooges' apocalyptic, high-octane bombshell, Raw Power! At times this searing, end-of-the-world death platter--home to such proto-punk frontal assaults as 'Search and Destroy,' 'Shake Appeal,' and 'Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell'--even threatens to surpass its beyond-appropriate moniker. Although this incarnation of the Stooges imploded not long after its release, Raw Power became the LP that launched a million punk rock bands all around ... |

And Then Nothing Turned...(more) »rank: 106725by: YO LA TENGO
:Album Description:Full title - And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out. Tenth album from American indie act. Digipak. 2000 release. Matador Records. 's Best of 2000:Yo La Tengo's most consistently brilliant record is also their quietest, as husband and wife Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley turn the volume down while exploring decidedly grown-up relationship themes. It's definitely not the shoe-gazer-tinged barrage of guitars they've supplied in the past, but the silences here speak louder than an amplified guitar ever could. --Matthew Cooke Amazon.com:Yo La Tengo's 11th album is a relentlessly satisfying, slyly low-key affair with shimmery organs, muted soft-brush drumming, loping bass lines, casually ... |

Continuing a fortuitous tradition of capturing the Sondheim legacy on video recordings, this performance was filmed before a live audience in Los Angeles during the 1982 national tour. Almost 20 years later, Hearn returned to the role opposite Patti LuPone in an acclaimed concert production. But Sweeney Todd is an especially compelling experience in this 1982 version, complete with the clever staging tricks (e.g., the barber's chair) and as close to the original cast as we're likely to see. --David Horiuchi
