Last Wave Rockers(more) »rank: 234816by: Common Rider
:Album Description:1999 debut album by band fronted by former Operation Ivy frontman/lyricist Jesse Michaels, his first real band in over a decade. Musically, this is a logical extension of his former band, combining heartfelt punk, rock-steady reggae influences and Buddy Holly-style stripped down rock and roll. |

In on the Kill Taker(more) »rank: 160160by: Fugazi
: :By far the most unrelievedly aggressive of this seminal D.C. foursome's seven albums, this 1993 collection assembles all the essential elements of Fugazi's aesthetic--strafing melodic tension, dynamic shifts, and unrestrained lyrical fury--and drives them into the psyche with nary a hint of sonic subtlety. That might sound one-dimensional, but somehow Ian MacKaye and company manage to wring a full spectrum of emotional impact out of that small patch of territory. From typically vociferous political plaints ('Smallpox Champion') to decidedly personal missives designed to provoke self-examination ('Great Cop'), the songs invariably cut to the bone. The highlight? 'Cassavetes,' which stutters and swells ... |

Green(more) »rank: 197605by: R.E.M.
: :Green catapulted R.E.M. from campus cult favorites to rock stars of the highest order. The album contains three of the Athens, Georgia, quartet's most popular radio hits ('Pop Song 89,' 'Stand,' and 'Orange Crush'), punching up the big rock hooks and letting the spooky independent production slip away. Some diehard fans cried 'Sellout!' but that's a strange attitude given singer Michael Stipe's environmental activism. 'I'm very scared of this world,' he sings above jangling mandolins on 'You Are the Everything.' It's still unclear what he's trying to say, but at least we can understand the words this time. --Steve Knopper |

One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels(more) »rank: 144209by: Bright Eyes, Neva Dinova
:Album Description:Bright Eyes and Neva Dinova, both from Omaha, are longtime friends and mutual fans. Both bands have supported each other for years - long before the overwhelming mass notoriety that has enveloped Bright Eyes. Talk of doing a joint release has been bouncing back and forth between them for what seems like eons - yet hectic schedules have continuously delayed the project. Finally, they found some time. Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst plays guitar and sings backup on the Neva Dinova songs, and Neva Dinova plays some music and sings backup on the Bright Eyes tunes. The result is a mystifying, ... |

Davie Allan & The Arrows recorded the most frenzied instrumentals the world has ever heard! Allan's fuzzed-out guitar was an audio compass pointing towards freedom, sex, danger and violence, his trashy fretboard riffs exploding behind flickering celluloid images of cycle runs, biker fights, drug freakouts and rubber-burnin' hot rods. The myriad of Arrows' recordings is filled with loud, loose and avage tracks, and includes the mega-hit 'Blues Theme' from the trashy Roger Corman ... |

Suicidal Tendencies(more) »rank: 209279from: Frontier Records
: :When punk rock met the formless rebellion that permeated L.A.'s working-class suburbs in the early '80s, a weird hybrid was born, drawing equally from heavy-metal thunder and Ritalin-generation aggression. Suicidal Tendencies' frontman Mike Muir was one of them, and they knew it immediately, latching onto the half-spoken, half-screeched brain bomb 'Institutionalized' as an instant classic. That song is certainly the best-known track on this, the group's debut, but it's hardly the only essential one: 'Fascist Pig,' 'I Shot the Devil,' and 'Possessed' all rage on mightily, the arcs of guitar from Rocky George and Mike Clark serving to push Muir to ... |
