Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Relive The Power & Passion ...
Two of things that make U2 such as special band is their passion and energy. While these traits are present on their studio albums, they come to the front in their live performances. Under A Blood Red Sky perfectly captures all their raw emotions and energy. The album opens with the soaring "Gloria" from their October album and then sieges into "11 O'Clock Tick Tock". Next is a scorching version of their first hit "I Will Follow". "Party Girl" is a great lost U2 song. It was originally issued as a b-side and available on imports only. It starts off with just the Edge strumming his guitar and builds up to a powerful crescendo. Bono states on the record that "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is not a rebel song, but it is definitely an anthem. Bono has always had a bit of a preacher in him and as he urges the crowd to chant "no more", the album takes on the feel of an old time revival. After whipping things up to a fever pitch, "The Electric Co." and "New Year's Day" follow and they mellow things out. The hymn-like "40" is the final track and the album ends on a poignant note with just the crowd singing the chorus. For those of you who may only be familiar with the U2 of the 90's and their mammoth Pop Mart and Zooropa concerts, this album is a fine sampler of their earlier efforts. While the approach is simpler in nature, it produces just as big of a sound. This deluxe edition is superb on several levels. First it contains the full concert video presented for the first time on dvd. The visual setting of the band in this breath-taking amphitheater perfectly compliments the music. The picture is crisp and clean with the sound being excellent. Then there is the packaging that has the cd and dvd housed in what looks like a hard covered book. The booklet contains a lengthy text as well as rare photos including ones from a different set of shows at Colorado State University.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Before they were superstars ...
Finally, this classic concert movie is on DVD, along with the mini album that captures U2's War tour wonderfully. The DVD includes the other songs from their famed Red Rocks concert in Denver Colorado in 1983 which were not on the original VHS tape, but that were on a widely circulated bootleg of the show. This concert, even though the crowd was cut in half due to the cold and rainy weather, was a landmark show that put U2 on the national map in much the same way that their Live Aid performance in 1985 catapulted them on their way to super stardom. This show captures them at that point when they were transitioning themselves into a major rock act, showcasing their talent of bringing the audience close together and to them on the stage. They were still honing their sound and their playing, and the sheer emotion of this performance is set against the eerie fog and cold of the evening. Highlights of this DVD are New Years Day, Sunday Bloody Sunday, I Threw a Brick Through a Window, and Electric Company. It had their trademark ending song of 40, which is base on the 40th Psalm. Great band, great DVD and CD. If you are just getting into U2's more recent stuff, you need to listen to this to get a feel of where they have come from.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Really 4.5 because of the CD - but this is really nice ...
This DVD is really well done - no frills, the focus was just on the sight and sound, and the result is excellent. It has a really nice hardcover book format in a thick hard slipcase. Great booklet. The only disappointment in this particular package is that the CD wasn't expanded. If you love this music, you only need to decide whether you want this or just the DVD.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * U2 Early Years ...
If you have seen the tape Version of this then you know what you can expect. Only that this is clearly the better Sound and picture quality. Sure you can see that this is an old recording but the Sound Quality is amazing. This set is for every U2 fan out there a must have.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * MY INTRODUCTION TO U2... ...
"Under A Blood Red Sky" was my introduction to live U2 about 25 years ago. I had a copy of a copy that was passed around in my circle of friends, we used to actually fight over who was going to get it next and for how long. Since then I've been a huge U2 fan and will be for life. U2's music (especially live) has inspired me in many ways. U2 is truely one of the most unique bands to have ever played and to still be playing live. I highly recomend this live performance. It is awe inspiring to say the least. Go out and get some U2!

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon

Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce
