Editorial Review:

Amazon.com essential recording:
'Appalachia circa 1907' is the way they described it in the postgame interviews. It wasn't, of course, but it was as close as you could come in 1987 and still hope to sell the million copies that this ended up selling. The 'Three Tenors' of country music juggle leads, complement each other to often haunting effect, and subjugate their egos to a greater cause. The songs run the gamut from primordial country favorites like 'Rosewood Casket' and 'Hobo's Meditation,' to '50s pop (a rather anomalous 'To Know Him Is to Love Him'), and mainstream country. The instrumentation is restrained, the vocals are unfailingly lovely, and the result is a trio that is more than the sum of its parts. --Colin Escott

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Listen to it over and over ...
I love this CD! It's definately one of my all time favorites - a classic.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * A Favorite Album ...
I love this album and for lots of reasons. The most important one, though, is that the music is more than the sum of its parts. I like Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Emmylou Harris, but I'm not a huge fan of any of them either. Each of them is limited in their own ways. Their voices work incredibly well together, though! Similarly, I don't think I would go out of my way to hear the collection of mostly older tunes on this album, but again, these three together remake them in ways that most artists doing cover tunes can only dream of.

That's not to say that every track is terrific. There are a couple that I routinely skip (e.g., "Making Plans", and "Hobos Meditation". On the other hand, there are several that I'll listen to over and over, even after hearing them for years. The best known track is probably "To Know Him is to Love Him", which is superb, but the track I like best is "Telling Me Lies", which I'm listening to as I write this. Linda Ronstadt's voice is in lead on that track and is incredibly powerful. It's also a good illustration of how their voices work together. At the end of the tune, Linda is initially singing alone, Emmylou finishes a phrase for her, then Dolly joins and the sound just transforms into the most wonderful blend of all three.

Priceless.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Harmony Galore ...
The voices of these three singing stars blend together in unbelievable harmony. Each is a superstar in her own genre, but together they are unbeatable. I not only recommend this album highly, I buy it for my friends.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - * Dulcimer Player ...
Beautiful harmony. I would recommend this CD. I am rating it a 4 instead of a 5 because of some of the song choices. Wildflowers Don't Care Where They Grow is a great song written by Dolly. There are other great songs on this CD as well. If you like good, country, harmony you can't miss with this CD

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * I LOVE Trio ...
I appreciate the service and product availability offered by Amazon - I replaced an old tape with a CD, and am extremely pleased with the results!

Wonderful Town is a terrifically fun musical, but do you really need this recording? The answer will be yes if you fall within one of these two categories: (a) You collect recordings of the show and must own them all or (b) you're a huge fan of Brooke Shields. The actress replaced Donna Murphy in the lead role of the 2003 Broadway revival, and did a creditable job bringing Ruth Sherwood to gawky life during her five-month run. Shields performs over the same instrumental tracks you can hear on the revival's prime recording. (Jennifer Hope Wills replaces Jennifer Westfeldt as Eileen Sherwood; the rest of the cast is unchanged.) From a purely vocal point of view, the switch wasn't an upgrade--Murphy is among Broadway's best stylists after all--though Shields is far from being an embarrassment. She may not have the technique, but her comic gusto is winning. Still, this CD remains for completists only. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
