Reggatta Mondatta: A Reggae Tribute to the Police

: :It's only fitting that some of reggae's top stars should record Police songs, as Sting and Co. were enormously influenced by reggae, and their popularity gave reggae a needed boost in public awareness. Twelve artists working in different genres, from roots to dancehall, run through spirited versions of some of the band's (mostly Sting's) most famous songs, including 'Roxanne' (Aswad), 'Message in a Bottle' (Maxi Priest), and 'Every Breath You Take' (Betty Wright), while Sting himself contributes to tracks by Pato Banton and Ziggy Marley. Many of the artists also add lyrics of their own, but what becomes obvious from these ...

by: Merle Haggard, Merle Haggard & the Strangers

:Album Description:Remastered. If any one album deserves credit for ushering in the Western swing revival, it's this previously buried treasure from 1970. Haggard taught himself to play fiddle before recording this album and augmented his band with members of Wills's pioneering Texas Playboys, including guitarist Eldon Shamblin and fiddler Johnny Gimble. Merle would become a more fluid fiddler in the future, and the Strangers would swing more cohesively, but that doesn't take away from the chemistry or adventurousness in this, his first effort in the genre. Diana Princess of Wales Tribute

: :Given the multimedia frenzy that accompanied Princess Diana's untimely death, it's somehow appropriate that the tragedy should inspire this album--a 2 CD set featuring 36 old and new tracks by an array of international stars--with a portion of the proceeds going to a Memorial Fund established in the late Princess' name. But, with Diana's death as the only unifying thread (and a tenuous one at that), it's not a particularly consistent or cohesive listen. But it's hard to argue with such an impressive array of stars including Celine Dion, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, the Spice Girls, Barbra Streisand, Paul McCartney, Bruce ...

Home to Oblivion: Elliott Smith Tribute

by: Christopher O'Riley

: :Christopher O'Riley has gained recent renown for his two albums of piano adaptations of Radiohead songs, Hold Me To This and True Love Waits. He successfully found the inner classical composer in Thom Yorke, and turned the art-rock group's ambitious songs into symphonic excursions for solo piano. O'Riley brings the same technique to bear on Elliott Smith, a singer-songwriter of considerably more fragile design but who still reveled in idiosyncratic song structures and dense arrangements. Like the Radiohead albums, this isn't Smith turned into Muzak. O'Riley probes the dark underside of Smith's lyrics instrumentally, with shrouded chord clusters and tonal washes. ...

: : Will the last remaining jazz guitarist who hasn't recorded a tribute to Wes Montgomery please turn off the control board after he does? Yes, there have been a ton of salutes, but that shouldn't lessen interest in Pat Martino's Remember, which in having a guitarist of considerable stature in his own right cast personal meaning on Montgomery's strikingly original bop-meets-Django style covers all the bases a tribute should. Wes fans will enjoy hearing songs associated with him, ranging from his own 'Full House' to the Cannonball Adderley classic, 'Unit 7.' Fans of Martino, a product of Philadelphia's soul-jazz scene of ...

Some movie-loving wizards must have cast a magic spell on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, because it's another grand slam for the Harry Potter franchise. Demonstrating remarkable versatility after the arthouse success of Y Tu Mamá También, director Alfonso Cuarón proves a perfect choice to guide Harry, Hermione, and Ron into treacherous puberty as the now 13-year-old students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry face a new and daunting challenge: Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) has escaped from Azkaban prison, and for reasons yet unknown (unless, of course, you've read J.K. Rowling's book, considered by many to be the best in the series), he's after Harry in a bid for revenge. This dark and dangerous mystery drives the action while Harry (the fast-growing Daniel Radcliffe) and his third-year Hogwarts classmates discover the flying hippogriff Buckbeak (a marvelous CGI creature), the benevolent but enigmatic Professor Lupin (David Thewlis), horrifying black-robed Dementors, sneaky Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall), and the wonderful advantage of having a Time-Turner just when you need one. The familiar Hogwarts staff returns in fine form (including the delightful Michael Gambon, replacing the late Richard Harris as Dumbledore, and Emma Thompson as the goggle-eyed Sybil Trelawney), and even Julie Christie joins this prestigious production for a brief but welcome cameo. Technically dazzling, fast-paced, and chock-full of Rowling's boundless imagination (loyally adapted by ace screenwriter Steve Kloves), The Prisoner of Azkaban is a Potter-movie classic. --Jeff Shannon
