: essential recording:Based on James Michener's Tales of the South Pacific, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Pulitzer prize-winning South Pacific is one of the most beloved musicals ever to hit the stage. The appeal is simple: a collection of stunning compositions--immense symphonic sound orchestrated by Rodgers collaborator Robert Russell Bennett--and characters with a simple though cohesive through-line. On this original Broadway cast recording, the lovely, girlish Mary Martin (Peter Pan, Annie Get Your Gun) is the heartily feminine American nurse Nellie Bly to the dashing former Metropolitan Opera bass Ezio Pinza as French plantation owner Emile de Becque. : :A romantic's collection if ever there was one, this cachet of songs graced the equally heart-tugging film. King of the Croon and Swoon, Nat King Cole's 'Stardust' is probably the most obvious of the young lovers' themes here. Louis Armstrong and Jimmy Durante, ordinarily not the most romantic of sorts, prove themselves worthy contenders with 'A Kiss to Build a Dream On' and 'As Time Goes By,' respectively. 'In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning' gets an elegantly simple treatment from Carly Simon, and Tammy Wynette's 'Stand by Your Man' confirms her status as the late, great Queen of Country. ...

: :Originally released in 1971, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory was an imaginative film that drew as much inspiration from the leftover vibes (and drugs) of the psychedelic '60s as it did from Roald Dahl's fanciful children's book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. If you doubt it, check out this special 25th anniversary edition of the original soundtrack album, which features lyrics and music by Anthony Newley, who was a major influence on David Bowie and whose work on this film has clearly inspired '90s rockers from Veruca Salt (who took their name from the spoiled rich girl) to the Butthole ...

: :This five-CD box set soundtrack to filmmaker Ken Burns's 10-part, 19-hour documentary Jazz spans nearly a century of jazz styles, from the martial rhythms of James Reese Europe to the soul-jazz of Grover Washington Jr. It includes time-tested classics like Benny Goodman's 1938 classic, 'Sing, Sing, Sing'; John Coltrane's chanting 1965 immortal track, 'A Love Supreme'; Billie Holiday's blue-ember ballad, 'God Bless the Child'; and Ella Fitzgerald peeling off 'A-Tisket A-Tasket.' Bebop is represented by Charlie Parker's orchestral bop version of 'Just Friends'; Thelonious Monk's nocturnal calling card, ''Round Midnight'; and Dizzy Gillespie's 'Salt Peanuts' and 'Groovin' High.' The jazz-instrumentalist-as-singer comes ...

: :A perfect martini-and-mistletoe combo, Christmas Cocktails will gaily seduce you with its bevy of nostalgic and occasionally campy holiday fare. Vocal vixens Peggy Lee, Julie London (her 'I'd Like You for Christmas' will melt the ice cubes in your fridge), Kay Starr, and Nancy Wilson join forces with perennial crooners such as Lou Rawls, Dean Martin, and the immortal Nat 'King' Cole, along with a handful of instrumental big-band numbers and odd, at times cheese-ball-shaped jazz organ pieces from Jimmy McGriff and the flammable Eddie Dundstedter, among others. But the essential item that makes plunking down your pelts for this very ...

This 44-minute musical Christmas movie finds Pooh, Tigger, Darby, and the rest of everyone's favorite characters from the Hundred Acre Wood enjoying a busy Christmas Eve filled with Christmas preparations and dreams about what they hope to receive from Santa. When Roo and Lumpy discover a fancy red bag in the snow and then stumble upon a young reindeer named Holly caught in a thicket, they find out that the bag they've found is Santa's magical toy sack and that without it, Santa may have to cancel Christmas. When Holly is unable to remember which direction leads home, Roo and Lumpy sound the super sleuth siren and the whole gang sets off for the North Pole to return Santa's bag. Using their knowledge of the North Star to guide them, the hopeful group makes their way toward the North Pole, but finds the road difficult and full of danger. Can the group make it to Santa in time to save Christmas by working together? Will their individual Christmas wishes ever come true? Bonus features include two episodes about friendship and teamwork ("Symphony for Rabbit" and "Tigger Goes Snowflakey") and the "Hundred Acre Wood Downhill Game" in which players pretend to ski down a hill and then interactively match presents with their intended recipients. (Ages 2 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

Pooh Bear and his pals in the Hundred Acre Wood celebrate Christmas and New Year's Eve in a pair of adventures folded into this 65-minute made-for-video feature. In the first, the silly old bear plays Saint Nick to his buddies ("I always thought he'd be taller") after failing to get an errant wish list off to Santa, while identity crisis strikes the gang in the second half. Piglet inherits Tigger's hop and jumps like a pogo stick, and Eeyore (dressed in Pooh's shirt) becomes a happy-go-lucky honey lover. Welcome to The Twilight Zone according to Winnie the Pooh. There's not much A.A. Milne in this TV-style holiday special, but it's a bouncy little production that should entertain the wee ones with its warm fuzzies, good company, slapstick energy, and life lessons. --Sean Axmaker
