Sinatra Reprise: The Very Good Years

(more) »rank: 5540

by: Frank Sinatra

: :A 20-track collection from the Reprise years that tries to cover too much ground. Very Good Years sweeps from the early 1960s to 1979's 'New York New York,' focusing on the most obvious Sinatra standards. The watchword here isn't art but populism. That's not a problem, really--but it means that serious fans (or those aspiring to be) will be better served elsewhere. It would be a fine introduction for the casual music lover, but so would any decent collection. For a compact Reprise-era sampler, try either this one or something from the Greatest Hits series. --Gavin McNett

Engelbert Humperdinck - His Greatest Hits

by: Engelbert Humperdinck

: :Engelbert Humperdinck, who at the circa 1968 height of his career shared a manager with fellow hunk Tom Jones, has never enjoyed the campy appreciation that has come to Jones in recent years--mostly because he's way too earnest compared to the teasingly all-man singer of 'What's New Pussycat' and 'She's a Lady.' Humperdinck certainly deserves a place on some space-age bachelor's mix tape with the quietly ebullient 'Quando Quando Quando,' the quietly invitational 'Winter World of Love,' and the quietly fatalistic 'Les Bicyclettes de Belsize'--maybe yours. Or at least your dad's. --Rickey Wright

: essential recording:Lions and tigers and bears, the yellow brick road, gamboling midgets, warnings scrawled high above by a skywriting witch: No movie ever imprinted itself on young imaginations or endured in adult memory more than MGM's classic 1939 musical, and no movie score ever hooked as forcefully into our collective cultural memory. This exemplary soundtrack finally treats this deserved classic to a thoughtful and comprehensive rendering that confirms the enduring power of Harold Arlen's original music and E.Y. 'Yip' Harburg's lyrics. On film, the songs unreeled as a mixture of discrete songs and multithemed medleys with frequent reprises, a presentation ...

by: Bill Frisell

:Album Description:Two CD set. Bill Frisell's History, Mystery is a series of short pieces, alternately elegant and playful, written by Frisell for an octet comprised of the guitarist himself and a group of longtime collaborators-friends. One evocative snippet melds into another to form a virtually seamless work that unfolds over the course of this double-disc package. It has an engrossingly theatrical quality, as if it were the score to some unseen play. Some of these tracks were originally written for Mysterio Sympatico, a 70-minute multi-media dialogue between Frisell and fellow Seattle based artist/comic book author Jim Woodring that premiered in 2002 ...

:Album Description:'Good Night, And Good Luck' follows the legendary Edward R. Murrow (David Straithairn) during the broadcaster's on-air confrontations with Senator Joseph McCarthy. Murrow, the then host of the CBS series, 'See It Now,' exposed the infamous politician's deceit, bullying, and manipulation in one of history's most courageous moments of journalism, an act that helped bring an end to the tyranny of the blacklist and the House Un-American Activities Committee anti-Communist hearings. 'Good Night, And Good Luck' is directed by George Clooney, who co-wrote the script with the film's producer Grant Heslov. Clooney also stars as CBS News producer Fred Friendly. ...

Frank Sinatra Sings for Only the Lonely

(more) »rank: 3902

by: Frank Sinatra

: essential recording:Look past the tacky, sad-clown velvet painting on the cover (a Grammy-winner for album design in 1959!), there's nothing cheap or sentimental about this record--the bleakest and blackest album of popular songs ever recorded, so quietly powerful it can leave you slumped in your chair with the ice cubes still rattling in your glass. Every single 'suicide song' (as Sinatra liked to call 'em) on Only the Lonely is a stunner that will take your breath away. Nelson Riddle's arrangements are like shadows, almost colorless and motionless, so that all you hear is the ache in the singer's voice. ...

: :Backed by lush orchestration and a choir of quite formal carolers, Michael Crawford's A Christmas Album plays as an elegant concert rather than a random collection of seasonal ditties. An entertainment embracing the good news of Christ's birth, A Christmas Album is thankfully not something we'll hear booming all over town as we shop till we drop. Instead, this is precisely the type of recording one might enjoy at home with family while making an advent wreath or preparing holiday goodies to be shared with loved ones. Crawford's rich theatricality and classical arrangements invoke a joyful sense of spirit in readiness ...
