Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
This Vanguard double-LP 'twofer' captures the seminal folk group, the Weavers--Ronnie Gilbert, Lee Hays, Fred Hellerman, and Pete Seeger--in 64 minutes of classic songs. Borrowing from both live and studio recordings--including the historic 1955 Carnegie Hall concert--Greatest Hits covers a wide range of favorites, among them 'Kisses Sweeter than Wine,' 'Tzena, Tzena, Tzena,' 'Wimoweh,' 'Goodnight Irene,' an intimate 'Guatanamera,' 'Wreck of the John B.,' 'This Land Is Your Land,' and 'So Long, It's Been Good to Know You.' --David Horiuchi

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * The Weavers ...
This is a great album, maybe one of THE folk albums. I have the LP of this; got it back in the '60's. The Weavers helped pave the way for the outspokenness of folk music in the '60's. Some of their work is just for fun, those songs we all still sing, but they made statements, too. Sadly the recording quality of this isn't like modern stuff, but I just turn it up louder. This was even pre-stereo. You have to kind of imagine yourself there. You are just one big ear.
They oughta make a movie about The Weavers, get people who sing like they sang, record it real good. But maybe it'd be better to use the actual music and have people mime it.
Anyway, every American should listen to this.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * a trip back in time ...
I had never heard of the Weavers until I watched a recent PBS documentary. I immediately got online and bought this one. This is a great CD and makes me think how great it must have been "back in the day" to be happy with simpler things (great music) instead of so caught up in all the craziness that is our world today. There are a few songs (Rock Island Line, for example) that make me turn the volume way up and sing along.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Mark Torres Travel Tips For Aztlan KPFK 90.7FM Los Angeles ...
This release is an essential purchase for those who enjoy folk music or are excavating the folk music tradition. The Weavers were one of the first groups to attain commercial success when their version of Leadbelly's Goodnight Irene was a number 1 single in America for 7 weeks in 1950...!!!
Their success began a folk music resurgence that would eventually bring us the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter Paul and Mary, Judy Collins, Buffie St. Marie, Phil Ochs, The Kingston Trio and countless others

All this from a group that was hounded by HUAC, blacklisters and boycotters and was eventually forced to concede any dream they might have had to make a living from their music. They didn't even release or perform their beautifully happy and hopeful song If I Had A Hammer because of the relentless pressure on them. Of course all was forgotten when Pete Paul and Mary made a hit of If I had a Hammer a decade later.

The weakest part of this release is the lack of liner notes to tell their story and put their accomplishments in perspective... The music is wonderful.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - * Still the old magic ...
I would have given this review 5 stars because the Weavers are the Weavers and these are such wonderful songs. My only disappointment is that I'm afraid I've grown accustomed to the big sound of modern recordings and I wish there were some way they could boost the sound of this one. I suppose several tracks is too much to ask for, but it sounds a bit two-dimensional.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - * not good folk ...
maybe good for weaver fans, but frankly i think of the weavers as sellouts to pop music. if you want good lee hays or pete seeger, listen to the almanac singers, where they at least have woody guthrie.

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon

Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce
