Rating: - * If you're deciding between this and \"Once\" soundtrack, get this! ... When I thought about buying this album, I was torn between it and the soundtrack from the movie "Once". I decided to get this because I felt like it would have more of an album feel. That it does. Listening to this album is like following the songwriters through a cohesive story of the character they created. Every song is passionate/wonderful/beautiful. Especially the Marketa Irglova instrumental(s). The art in the liner notes is pretty cool, too. Rating: - * Beautiful and Richly Textured ... I checked out The Swell Season at Bonnaroo this year and they blew me away with their rich and finely textured songs. This first album captures the same spirit, in a sonically richer environment. Highly recommended to any fan of fabulous songwriting and beautiful harmony and melody. Rating: - * excellent ... I loved the entire cd. To appreciate the impact of both singers, you might want to view the movie "ONCE". The movie gives a much deeper impact to the songs and artists. Rating: - * Great listening ... Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova are a dynamic duo. This is hauntingly beautiful and energizing music. Definitely see the movie "Once" as well. This CD shares three songs with the soundtrack to the movie and the other pieces are in the same vein. It's genuine, gutsy music with awesome harmonies and real lyrics. It makes you glad to have ears. Rating: - * Easy to listen to ... Released before the movie Once popularized the music of the eclectic duo of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. Some are earlier versions of numbers heard in Once such as 'Lies' and 'Falling Slowly', but most are original to this album. The title cut is an instrumental (piano) piece. Both albums share a quiet combination of mostly lead guitar and male vocal with vocal and piano highlights from Irglova, although they trade roles from time to time. The music is soulful, relational, reflective at times, angry at times and revolves around real people and situations. Worth a listen. |

The two-disc set also includes The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon: A 10th Anniversary Special. In this 40-minute adventure, Dr. Yung invites Misty and Ash to take part in a special tournament on his new battle system. Yung creates formidable Mirage Pokémon from raw data, culminating in a super-version of Mewtwo, the powerful psychic Pokémon from the first features. Once again, friendship and kindness triumph over greed and arrogance, although the special ends with the words, "To be continued..." Its unlikely that the full impact of the live performances will hit home to viewers unfamiliar with Jay-Z and his Roc-A-Fella Records stable of artists. Another frustration is trying to identify the array of visitors who trade raps on Jays stage. Included in the star-studded lineup are Missy Elliott, Foxy Brown, Pharell, Ghostface Killah, Beanie Sigel, Memphis Bleek, and R. Kelly. One unmistakable figure--and we do mean figure--is Jays squeeze Beyonce, who raises the temperature and the roof with her skimpy outfit, flowing hair, soulful yowl, and sexed-up dance routine that leaves her boyfriend and the whole of Madison Square Garden slack-jawed with animal desire.
Twenty cameras captured the event, and some of the most powerful sequences are sweeping moves across the swirling, blissed-out masses as they lip sync along in perfect unison with Jay-Zs complex, profane, quick-witted raps. Less effective are intermittent cutaway segments that show the artist in various studio settings working up beats and rhymes. These amateurish home video breaks may give some insight to Jays perfectionism and dedication to his craft, but they detract from the visceral power of the beautifully executed performance footage. --Ted Fry
