: essential recording:As emblematic of its time as of its sorcerer-like creator, 1967's Are You Experienced unleashed Jimi Hendrix onto a world in the midst of such cultural and musical shakeups that it really didn't seem as 'far out' as it actually was. It wasn't just Hendrix's virtuosic skill as a pure player that was so impressive; it was, even more, the range and scope of sheer sound that he coaxed, cajoled, and ripped out of his instrument. 'Purple Haze,' 'Manic Depression,' and 'I Don't Live Today' filled ears with indelible sonic images, and songs like 'Foxey Lady' and 'Fire' pointed ...

: :\N essential recording:Bursting with ideas and energy, Jimi Hendrix's second album release of 1968 (following Axis: Bold as Love) was a double-LP set that showcased virtually everything the guitar genius had to offer: blistering blues ('Voodoo Chile'), galaxy-patrolling space jams ('1983... A Merman I Should Turn to Be'), psychedelic soul ('Crosstown Traffic'), and skyscraping rock ('Voodoo Child (Slight Return)'). In the midst of all this was even a hit song--Hendrix's remarkable reading of Bob Dylan's 'All Along the Watchtower,' featuring a series of baton-passing guitar solos, all distinct and brilliant. Seemingly diffuse when first released; in hindsight, kaleidoscopically eclectic. ...

:Album Description:Japanese only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD - playable on all CD players) pressing. Universal. 2008. :Jimi Hendrix's second album doesn't resonate through rock history the way its gatecrashing predecessor, Are You Experienced?, does. In places, it almost seems as if Hendrix is cruising, albeit sublimely. Yet it's a vital album, containing some of rock's molten milestones. There's the fluid psychedelia of 'Castles Made of Sand,' the viciously funky 'Little Miss Lover,' and the so-beautiful-it-hurts 'Little Wing.' Hendrix really hits altitude with 'If 6 Was 9,' where he waves his 'freak flag high' over a tidal wave of guitar and ...

:Album Description:The DVD soundtrack features a new 5.1 surround and 2.0 stereo mixes by Eddie Kramer, Jimi's original engineer. The CD will feature the brand new, stereo mix heard here for the first time. :It's no exaggeration to say this might be the most intense and groundbreaking 45-minute performance in the history of rock. Jimi Hendrix's debut American set at 1967's Monterey Pop Festival is generally considered one of the most radical and legendary live shows ever, so this re-mastered version of the rather short, ten-song gig is long overdue. Released in conjunction with the similarly titled DVD (which presents the ...

That the great guitarist's unreleased musings have been explored since his death three decades ago wouldn't seem to bode well for a multidisc collection such as this. But this retrospective boggles the mind merely by presenting how much Hendrix accomplished in a few short years and, in doing ...

: :Some of Jimi Hendrix's live radio broadcasts for the BBC were released by Rykodisc in 1988 on Radio One, but The BBC Sessions, remastered and fleshed out into a two-disc completist's dream, is perhaps the best document of how the Experience sounded live in 1967. From blues stomps such as Muddy Waters's 'Catfish Blues' to surly R&B vamps such as the three takes of Curtis Knight's 'Driving South,' Hendrix explores his roots with hardscrabble passion. Meanwhile, he pushes the psychedelic-pop spectrum with surprisingly rich versions of studio-tweaked numbers like 'The Burning of the Midnight Lamp.' There's plenty of slop--a stumbling jam ...

While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the record does hang together as a listen. On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
