Editorial Review:

Album Description:
'...a collection of timeless classics chosen and covered by the Queen herself'

Amazon.com:
Everyone grows up... even rappers. Pioneering female MC Queen Latifah shows a newfound level of maturity on The Dana Owens Album. A set of standards the rapper/actress decided to cover, the album features a host of jazz classics and R&B favorites.

Latifah is at her seductive best when playing the sultry siren on Al Green's 'Simply Beautiful.' With a little help from Green himself, Latifah's vocals slide over the warm, organ-drenched instrumental. The result is one that works today as well as it would have several years ago. Similarly, the big band-backed 'Baby Get Lost' swings with bluesy groove that is pure nostalgia.

However, it's when Latifah mines more standard fare that the album seems to hita snag. Fans of James Moody's 'Moody's Mood for Love' may want to skip Latifah's version, as it misses the subtle perfection of the original. Her rendition of 'I Put a Spell On You' doesn't falter, but it's not impressive either. It ends up being the kind of performance that finds you constantly waiting for more but never getting it. The same can be said for her cover of the Mamas & the Papas' 'California Dreamin'.'

That said, with Latifah's recent critically acclaimed turn in the film Chicago, this album's timing couldn't have been better. And with help from legendary producer Arif Mardin (Aretha Franklin), The Dana Owens Album is an interesting and impressive new chapter in the star's diverse career. --Rashaun Hall

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - * Another side of Queen Latifah! ...
She has a great voice & I enjoyed this CD. There were only a couple of songs that I thought were "overdone," but I recommend this CD for those who enjoy the standards and Dana's talented vocals and delivery.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Chase Von's Review of The Dana Owens Album ...
When I first heard this ladies version of "California Dreamin" I loved it! Only one problem? Who was singing it? Seemed every time I caught it on the radio I would miss the part where they said who it was by. So you can imagine my surprise when I found out it was Dana Owens, AKA Queen Latifah! Over the years I've been quite impressed with this Lady! She continues to grow as an artist and a soul and it is apparent to me she has been blessed with a myriad of gifts! Outstanding actress as displayed in "Set it Off", exceptionally well known in the rap world and her lovely face has graced the cover of so many magazines! Not to mention her comedic skills "Living The Single Life" and now? An entire album of her singing?

To start in my opinion she has a very strong and rich voice! And the music is not only something that I can listen to and enjoy, but I am sure those a bit older than myself would also truly appreciate as well! Which I think is a bold, daring and brave move on her part considering her fame as a rapper. And something if you're going to attempt to do, you have to do incredibly well or face plant!

And she certainly does better than well! Perhaps people that only wanted to hear rap previously are getting an appreciation for music that I'm sure their parents would approve of, as well as their grand parents...

For the first part, or up to "California Dream in" it's easy to see Dana in a smoke filled room with a piano backing her or perhaps laying on a piano from time to time! I also think if she were magically transported to the time when this music reigned, she would easily be headlining where ever she went!

"Baby Get Lost", "I Put A Spell On You", "Simply Beautiful", "The Same Love That Made Me Laugh", "Moody's Mood For Love" and "Close Your Eyes" all put me in the relaxed mood of listening to someone who can certainly hold her own and not be out shined by the fine music that accompanies them all, as well as in my minds eye, that this would be in black and white like the movies of old...

"California Dreaming" reminds me of a newer version of a song being sung better than the original! Just like Luther Vandross took "Super Star" originally done by the Carpenters, slowed it down and added his special magic, the same can be said for Dana' version of this song. Hard Times, Mercy, Mercy Mercy, Hello Stranger seem to me to almost be performed in a way regardless of when they were originally written, that is more current or like music that is closer to the now...

Then back again we go to an older period in time in music with "If I Had You" and the big band ending with "Lush Life"...

It's again easy to imagine Dana in a sequined gown with a cigarette in a stylish holder mesmerizing every man in sight!

There are no weak songs on this CD, my favorite on it is "California Dreaming" and again the majority of the other songs put me in a mind set or a time of Nina Simone, Billy Holiday, Dorothy Dandridge, Marilyn Monroe, Nat King Cole and Sammy Davis Jr., and just a time period in general that spoke of class, style and elegance.

Solid CD, strong, beautiful and rich voice and I don't know if it was done intentionally but one almost get's the feeling that Dana, by choosing the music she did, is giving respect to her elders and perhaps turning on this generation to another form of music that we truly don't want to be forgotten...

I'm very pleased to have this in my collection and the plain truth of the matter is, Dana truly can sing!

Really!!!

When parents have kids, just based on life, I think a gap forms because of being influenced by different times. I also think something that bridges that gap is when the kids have kids, and the parents become grand parents.

In many ways I think that is what Dana achieves here, and like all she has done artistically, exceptionally well!!!

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - * Irksome lack of knowledge of the LYRICS ...
I do like Queen Latifah as an actress. I do not like her as a so-called 'jazz singer'. Why not? Well, heck she didn't get the lyrics right SEVERAL times. Particularly in Lush Life. Gee, people, if you are gonna pretend you 'love jazz' then you should at least know the lyrics to the songs you attempt to sing. For those of us who are musicians and who have worked as session musicians, please don't insult us! It's very very very obvious Queen's 'voice' was extended, lifted, lowered and generally 'embellished'. Sure they all do it, but I expected something better from Queen. So I'm not buying the mp3s, but will go get more Diane Krall and Nina Simone and Etta James. Thanks but no thanks, Queenie. Stick to 'rap' or whatevah it is you DO do other than act. Or just stick to acting, you do that well, in a certain kind of role at least.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * well done ...
the Queen suprises a lot of folks with this cd composed of all singing. With a jazzy, R&B feel to it. It takes you on a trip and doesnt bring you back until the last song is over with. Its very soothing, comforting and her voice is strong when needed and subtle yet passionate on other tracks. But throughout the Dana Owens album there is one thing for sure that not only can she rap. But she can also sing as well, it doesnt feel like a gimmick or something forced. Its a natural progression and i love it. I do hope that she does another rap album in the future, but for now. I'm very happy with this effort.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * the queen crosses over! ...
queen latifah followed up her fantastic performance in 2002's 'chicago' with a cd of light jazz standard of many decades.

if i'mnot mistaken, she dedicated the album to her mother, but this is one for the many fans that knew she could deliver the goods with a great set of melodies and lyrics.

every track is golden but the best are her versions of 'california dreaming', 'hard times' and 'moody's mood for love'.

'trav'lin light' is the next step on latifah's journey to a throne as the newest jazz/r&b queen! now if only her next films are as rich and varied as these two cds....

one can dream, can't one?

The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he's a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he's hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel footage is both funny and impressive, but the heart of the film lies in its sweet love story and in the triumphant performance of Hanks as an unassuming soul who savors the most from his life and times. --Robert Lane

Gina Prince-Bythewood, a former college athlete, puts a spin on this one-on-one tale of Love and Basketball. Sanaa Lathan (The Best Man) is the fiercely driven, hot-tempered Monica, a tomboy who gives her all for basketball. Omar Epps (The Mod Squad) is Quincy, an NBA player's son who has pro dreams of his own. Next-door neighbors since first grade, they start as rivals (she flabbergasts the boy by outplaying him in a game of driveway pickup) and age into best friends and lovers. The romantic complications follow a familiar game plan, but the film throws a fascinating spotlight onto the contrast between men's and women's basketball. While Quincy plays college ball on huge courts to cheering, sold-out crowds, we see Monica's sweat, tears, and sheer physical dedication in front of tiny audiences in small gyms and second-rate auditoriums.

The story is pointedly set in the late 1980s, years before the establishment of the WNBA, so Monica's prospects for pro ball lie exclusively in Europe, while Quincy steps into the pros at home. It's a pleasure to see a character as passionate and fully developed as Monica, and Lathan gives a fiery portrayal (she had never played ball before the film, but you'd never tell from her performance). Prince-Bythewood favors her struggle over Quincy's and opens our eyes to her unique challenges with a sharp, savvy contrast. Alfre Woodard costars as Monica's harping mom (always trying to get her to be more ladylike) and Dennis Haysbert is Quincy's philandering father. Hoops fan Spike Lee produced. --Sean Axmaker
