Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Based on Irish writer Roddy Doyle's novel and lovingly directed with admirable restraint by the sometimes bombastic Alan Parker, this quirky 1991 tribute to the enduring and universal power of American R&B took some cynical criticism for its reliance on Baby Boomer-era classics such as 'Mustang Sally,' 'Take Me to the River,' and 'In the Midnight Hour.' But that sword cuts two ways: by casting a motley crew of real musicians, including the guts 'n' gravel-voiced young vocalist Andrew Strong, Parker didn't have to do much coaxing to reveal the obvious respect and affection his players have for this music. The material may not be fresh, but the love with which it's played is timeless. --Jerry McCulley

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - * The Commitments CD ...
I really like the music. I haven't watched the movie yet, but the music is great. It makes me want to get up and dance.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - * you gotta hear this! ...
The Commitments is an amazing film and soundtrack. It follows a motley, unlikely group of young people in Dublin during the "troubles" (look this up, for those of you too young to know the history) who form a band. Their leader is enamored by Wilson Puckett (yeah, download his stuff too), and attempts to form this amazing band that does covers of classic and some unknown old Motown tunes. It's amazing -- the talent is incredible (where ARE these people today?!) and it sucks you in. Well worth the 10 bucks.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - * Sterilized Soul ...
Great film, worthy of praise on many different levels including the musical performances. The "soundtrack" has been processed. Voices have been run through clippers, and the music re-mastered. It's a sad little example of what corporate suits think soul should sound like in order to sell more copies. Tatoo your soul and buy the originals.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * The Commitments Soundtrack ...
This is a fantistic collection of music! All the tracks are filled with energy and good quality sound. Although not the original artists, they are great renditions of the classics. I would not hesitate to recommend this cd to anyone who likes rock classics.

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
