: :The Sopranos have become considerably more than just the average psychically tortured New Jersey mob family next door. HBO's innovative, if distinctly murderous soap opera has become a modern cultural icon, one whose innovative pop music score is almost an equal supporting cast member. The term dizzying has been overused in describing strong soundtrack collections, but it just might not do this second volume of Sopranos music justice. Show creator David Chase, director Martin Bruestle, and executive producer Brad Grey are credited with this rich, cross-genre, multigenerational collection, but they tellingly thank a few score others. The contributions from usual suspect vets like ...

: :Weeds is a funny title for a show about a funny plant, so you can expect the soundtrack to have a good sense of humor too. It does. 'Little Boxes' takes aim at suburban life, while, per usual, Nellie McKay uses her slightly precious sound to typical, sarcastic effect. Michael Franti & Spearhead's 'Ganja Babe' and NRBQ's 'Wacky Tobacky' capture the subject matter so well that listening could lead to a contact high. And tracks from the New Pornographers and Sufjan Stevens are there to remind us that Showtime knows What's Hot Now. Don't worry if you've never seen the show--you don't need ...

ROCKSStreet Release Date: 04/09/1996DomesticGenre: ROCK/POP COLLECTIONS :The beauty of Schoolhouse Rock in its original Saturday morning run (1973-85) was that kids watching couldn't tell whether the catchy three-minute cartoon jingles were meant to be commercials, shows, or something else entirely. That enabled overexposed TV youth to learn without realizing it between episodes of Scooby Doo and Fat Albert. Then the Brady Bunch generation became the alternative nation, and the innocence with which they took in these grammar, history, and math lessons was lost. Now comes the obligatory tribute album, ...

: :Sarah Michelle Gellar may be saving the world from vampires but her TV show is also helping a few worthy bands get some much needed exposure. Dayton, Ohio's ridiculously prolific Guided by Voices lead things off with the playful 'Teenage FBI,' a strong distillation of the band's knack for the irrepressible hook. The all-femme Hepburn protest in true 'Maggie's Farm' fashion (as in 'I ain't gonna work on...') for the quickstepping, bubble-gum punk-pop of 'I Quit.' Bif Naked's arena anthem 'Lucky' is perfect for staring at candles. Garbage are in suitably psychedelic glam shades for 'Temptation Waits.' Rasputina, the gothic cello ensemble, include ...

: :Unlike some CDs spawned from TV shows, there's not a lot to recommend SpongeBob SquarePants: The Yellow Album to listeners who don't set their clocks by the Nick cartoon. But in a culture as Sponge-ified as ours has become in the six years the series has been airing, does it really matter? The resounding, Squidward-sanctifying answer is No. Songs like 'Bubble Beat Box' and 'Jelly Fish Jam' have their limitations, sure--for one thing, they seem to last a split second, vamoosing before a 9-year-old can really get her groove going. And it's not as though our rectangular friend was able to recruit a ...

: :When Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks collaborated on the Academy Award®-winning Saving Private Ryan, an abiding passion to further honor the young fighting soldiers of World War II was born in both men, resulting in Band of Brothers, an ambitious 10-part miniseries based on historian Stephen Ambrose's account of a 101st Airborne regiment as it fought its way across Europe. In scoring the sweeping project, Michael Kamen has eschewed much of the martial music familiar from past war epics in favor of the quiet, largely introspective sound that's informed modern battle films from Platoon through Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line. And ...

Glamour girls Hilary and Haylie Duff (featured in Lizzie McGuire and 7th Heaven, respectively) star as cosmetic heiresses Ava and Tanzie Marchetta, whose lives get turned upside down when their deceased father's company is accused of selling toxic products. Wouldn't you know it, Ava and Tanzie decide to go all Erin Brockovich and investigate. Material Girls should be awful--but it isn't. It's not a great film, it may not even be a good film, but it's more watchable than it has any right to be, thanks to the confident and thoughtful guiding hand of director Martha Coolidge (Rambling Rose, Valley Girl). It's hard to say exactly how a director can keep something like Material Girls from being as insipid as, say, New York Minute. Coolidge injects some hint of awareness of what it actually means to be poor, casts some surprising actors (like Anjelica Huston, Prizzi's Honor; Brent Spiner, Star Trek: The Next Generation; and Lukas Haas, Brick), and somehow makes the Marchetta sisters both vapid and sympathetic--all of which is some impressive cinematic alchemy. The result is the most enjoyable film of Hilary Duff's career. --Bret Fetzer

If you are one of Hilary Duff's most ardent pre-teen fans, chances are you'll find something to enjoy in A Cinderella Story, but everyone else should proceed with caution. It's an updated fairy tale for the age of instant messaging, which is how Sam (Duff) develops a crush on Austin (Chad Michael Murray) before realizing that this Tennyson-quoting poet-at-heart is actually her San Fernando Valley high school's star quarterback and most desirable hunk. In a role that squanders her proven comedic gifts, Jennifer Coolidge is Sam's Botox-injected evil stepmother, and lame attempts at comedy turn her dimwitted stepsisters into buffoons, like many of the other cast members who struggle to find anything funny in the screenplay. So we're left with the bland, blonde charms of Hilary Duff, who fared better in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but manages to salvage her mainstream appeal in a comedy for which "cute" is not necessarily a compliment. --Jeff Shannon

If you're going to pitch a movie about cyber-revolutionaries to plugged-in audiences, you'd best mind your MP3s and BPMs when choosing soundtrack selections. The cynical wireheads who flock to such high-tech conspiracy flicks as Brazil and Hackers are thrillseekers of the highest caliber, and The Matrix soundtrack meets this challenge faster than a speeding cyborg. The opener, Marilyn Manson's anti-consumerism rant "Rock Is Dead," paints an aural portrait of urban decay. Ominous sirens permeate the Propellerheads' drum 'n' bass track "Spybreak!"; mournful piano alternates with hard shiny beats on Rob D's "Clubbed to Death"; and Meat Beat Manifesto fills "Prime Audio Soup" with enough bleeps to make one imagine being trapped inside a motherboard in Hell. It may sound dismal, but the friction permeating this compilation of techno, grindcore, and heavy metal is energizing enough to make fans of these genres feel the same unity as a clandestine community of hackers. --Kristy Ojala
