The Naked Brothers Band(more) »rank: 2248by: The Naked Brothers Band
: :It's been called Nickelodeon's answer to Hannah Montana, but The Naked Brothers Band is more like a latter-day Partridge Family, only you get the sense that Nat and Alex Wolff--stars of the TV series, singers in the band, and real-life brothers--lead way more balanced lives than Danny Bonaduce ever did. So it doesn't come as much of a surprise that, with the exception of 'Banana Smoothie,' a song that sounds extracted from a Wiggles record and grooved up for a slightly older audience, they've crafted a solid debut CD. Where the Partridges had a handful of memorable hooks and killer harmonies, the Nakeds--Nat ... |

The Ultimate Collection(more) »rank: 2617by: The Jackson 5
: essential recording:It's hard to think of a more quintessential pre-disco-era supergroup, and this really is the ultimate collection of the Jackson 5's finest. From the super-sweet 'I'll Be There' (which went on to become one of the most-covered songs in recent history) to the peppy pop of 'I Want You Back,' the period's essence is in every single high note. The Afros, the bell-bottoms, Michael pre-identity crisis, it's all there and so much more fun than anything any of the clan has done since. This is a great party album: classics like 'ABC,' 'Never Can Say Goodbye,' and 'Rockin' Robin' sit alongside ... |

Snowed In(more) »rank: 6901by: Hanson
: :Snowed In continues the time-honored tradition of Christmas albums by big-name pop acts, combining holiday-themed originals with familiar standards. This one's a cut above standard Yuletide fare, boasting the same tuneful effervescence that sets Hanson apart from standard-issue teen idols. This 11-song disc combines 3 smartly crafted originals with snappily Hansonized interpretations of such holiday standards as the Phil Spector chestnut 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),' the old Brenda Lee hit 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree,' the Beach Boys' 'Little Saint Nick,' Irving Berlin's 'White Christmas,' and the traditional 'Silent Night Medley.' That last track is a particularly nice showcase for the sibling ... |

Acoustic Hearts of Winter(more) »rank: 4390by: Aly & AJ
: :By teen-pop standards, Aly & AJ make a bold move on on their first holiday album and second disc. Instead of fizzing up the figgy pudding or decking the hall with a bunch of flashy hip-hop beats, they play it straight--'Silent Night' is justly peaceful (heavenly, even), 'Let It Snow' lands as softly as a blanket of the newly fallen white stuff, and 'Joy to the World' holds up its heartfelt peace sign by way of classic old-fashioned carol-crooning. Clearly the girls got a little giddy going through their parents' holiday music collection while conceiving this disc, and clearly they were thinking beyond ... |

Millennium(more) »rank: 4253by: Backstreet Boys
: :For their hard-core under-18 fans, of course, the Backstreet Boys are all that, and a bag of chips and free soda to boot. Millennium, the follow-up to the quintet's umpteen-million-selling debut, offers more reasons why so many of the rest of us have found a place for them in our hearts. The Boys' ultrapackaged look and up-to-date production underscore the quality of their best tracks; only a churl could deny that 'I Want It That Way' is one fine radio-aimed declaration of love, or that 'Larger Than Life' makes the most of its Daft Punk sample and double-edged acknowledgment of Backstreet followers' loyalty. ... |

But don't worry, there's plenty of wizardry and action in Goblet of Fire. When the deadly Triwizard Tournament is hosted by Hogwarts, Harry finds his name mysteriously submitted (and chosen) to compete against wizards from two neighboring academies, as well as another Hogwarts student. The competition scenes are magnificently shot, with much-improved CGI effects (particularly the underwater challenge). And the climactic confrontation with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, in a brilliant bit of casting) is the most thrilling yet. Goblet, the first installment to get a PG-13 rating, contains some violence as well as disturbing images for kids and some barely shrouded references at sexual awakening (Harry's bath scene in particular). The 2 1/2-hour film, lean considering it came from a 734-page book, trims out subplots about house-elves (they're not missed) and gives little screen time to the standard crew of the other Potter films, but adds in more of Britain's finest actors to the cast, such as Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody and Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter. Michael Gambon, in his second round as Professor Dumbledore, still hasn't brought audiences around to his interpretation of the role he took over after Richard Harris died, but it's a small smudge in an otherwise spotless adaptation. --Ellen A. On the DVD
The highlight of the two-disc set is a half-hour conversation with actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. They discuss their reactions to the film and other topics with British writer Richard Curtis . Then they answer questions from contest-winning fans, such as what are their favorite kids' books (Watson bypasses the obvious answer in favor of Roald Dahl and Philip Pullman) and what scenes are they looking forward to in upcoming films. More routine extras include the "Reflections on the Fourth Film" featurette (14 min.), though it has comments from some of the other young cast members, and "Preparing for the Yule Ball" (9 min.). The 10 minutes of additional scenes are mostly skulking and skullduggery, plus a long musical number from the ball. The remaining material is grouped along the lines of the Triwizard Tournament, with behind-the-scenes looks at each of the competitions (about 22 min. total), two longer featurettes on He Who Must Not Be Named (11 min.) and the workday of the other contestants (Robert Pattinson, Stanislav Ianevski, and Clémence Poésy, 13 min.), and four games, playable with the directional arrows on the remote control, that can be frustrating to figure out. --David Horiuchi
