: :Dipping into the latest installment of Disneymania is like hitting the local cineplex to watch a new Pixar flick: by reputation alone, you know your 10 bucks is being well spent. Production quality is only half of it: matching the character or, in this case, the classic Disney song to the unmistakable celebrity voice behind it also can be a real kick (just ask anybody who watched Wanda Sykes play a skunk in Over the Hedge). Which is why the latest disc in this unapologetically spunky series is worth shelling out for. If 3 served up a buffet of pop's bright young things, ...

by: Gabriella Cilmi

:Album Description:International pressing of the 2008 debut album from the Aussie singer/songwriter featuring one bonus track: 'Echo Beach'. Lessons To Be Learned was produced by the ever-popular Xenomania, also responsible for acts like Sugababes and others. Often compared to Amy Winehouse without any addictions, Cilmi (pronounced 'chill me') is a young talent with Pop hooks to match her good looks. Already wowing the UK and Europe with her sophisticated Pop, Cilmi is one of the few artists assured for world domination in 2008. If not, then we'll just have to come over to your house and destroy your drapes...and you wouldn't want that, ...

by: Brandy

: :Brandy has a lot to prove. She's had five Grammy nominations; she's won one Billboard Music Award, one American Music Award, and several Image and Soul Train awards; and she's sold over 4 million records--all by the age of 19. Never Say Never enters the scene after four years of sophomore jitters and plain old fear. And it enters with a bang. Brandy's voice suggests serious vocal training from her father, and strong songs--some written by her now-19-year-old woman-child self--attempt to take R&B back to its proper plateau. The album's first single, 'The Boy Is Mine,' and the Mase duet 'Top of the ...

: :The U.S. version of the Now That's What I Call Music series is often pegged as strictly kid stuff. There's no denying that many or most of the singles collected on volume 5 are beloved teen and preteen faves; even with a title cleanup, though, Mystikal's James Brown tribute 'Shake It Fast' provides plenty of grownup kicks. As do Destiny's Child, Mya, and Kandi, whose delicious pop-R&B tracks trump the over-30 rock of Everclear's 'Wonderful' and Bon Jovi's 'It's My Life' for sheer radio wisdom. At the same time, the CD's reliance on cuts stamped from a small handful of templates suggests that ...

: :One listen to the eagerly anticipated third CD from the world's biggest girl group and it's clear there is one child with the most destiny. To paraphrase the hip-hop legends, 'Who's house?' Beyoncé's house, and with the lead vocalist producing or cowriting all of the 14 tracks, it's hard to imagine what those other two chicks even do (other than act grateful to still have a gig). Seizing creative control is a bold move for Miss Knowles, and anytime an R&B act eschews the beat of the week, they have to be commended. But the problem is that Beyoncé, even with her ambition, ...

: :Where Britney Spears's first two albums hewed to the early-'60s formula of one strong single plus a stack of filler--a fair bit of which ended up on the radio anyway--her third justifies itself as a full-length listen. Led by the single 'I'm a Slave 4 U,' a Neptunes-helmed piece of electrofunk that promises she'll do anything you want as long as it's dancing, the album continues through superior versions of Spears's poses. Calculated frustration with the adult world? Calculated independence? Sheer celebration? Check, check, and check: 'Overprotected,' 'Let Me Be,' and a cover of 'I Love Rock & Roll' that brings to mind ...

:Album Description:Christina's 2000 release with 4 bonus remixes, 'Falsas Esperanzas' (Dance Radio Mix), 'Falsas Esperanzas' (Tropical Mix), 'Pero Me Acuerdo De Ti' (remix) & 'Ven Conmigo Solamente Tu (Karaoke Version). :You go, girl! Riding on the coattails of the Latin explosion, teen sensation Christina Aguilera decided to tap into her Ecuadorian roots (on her father's side) and brush up on her Spanish. With her newfound tongue, she translates five tracks of her multiplatinum self-titled debut. 'Genie in a Bottle' becomes 'Genie Atrapado,' 'Come On Over' becomes 'Ven Conmigo,' and her other major hits get code-switched and granted the added value of Spanish guitar ...

It's a measure of the ongoing popularity of Karen and Richard Carpenter that the 2002 release of this video collection in DVD format comes nearly 20 years after Karen's death. The duo's heyday mostly preceded the MTV age, so this 15-song, 55-minute anthology is a bit of a visual hodgepodge, composed of still photos, footage from TV shows and concerts, promo clips, fleeting attempts at conceptual videos, and other weirdness (film of Carpenters albums being pressed on the assembly line? Hey, whatever). You'll see an array of bad haircuts and outfits and a whole lot of lip-syncing, but in the end, it's the music that counts. And the Carpenters' signature sound, with its brilliant arrangements, its lush harmonies, and Karen's exquisite alto voice, was easy-listening pop at its finest. If nothing else, Carpenters: Gold offers another chance to hear that music in all its glory. --Sam Graham

With a gentle tug at the heartstrings, Evelyn tells the true story of an imperfect father whose devotion brought much-needed change to rigid Irish law. It's a labor of love for star and coproducer Pierce Brosnan, who brings just the right touch of Everyman charm to his role as Desmond Doyle, a struggling Dublin tradesman, father of three, and chronic pub-crawler whose wife abandons their family the day after Christmas, 1953. Desmond's a loving father who's boyishly irresponsible; Irish law dictates the removal of his children to stern Catholic orphanages, and his battle for custody is aided by two lawyers (Stephen Rea, Aidan Quinn) who seize this opportunity to revolutionize the courts. With straightforward, unobtrusive style, director Bruce Beresford draws fine performances from Brosnan, Julianna Margulies (as a barmaid who inspires Desmond's sobriety), and especially young Sophie Vavasseur in the title role as Desmond's bright, determined daughter. Sentimental without being saccharine, Evelyn is simple, well made, and bursting with genuine Irish spirit. --Jeff Shannon

Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce
