Deepest Purple: The Very Best of Deep Purple(more) »rank: 99653by: Deep Purple
: :In the '70s, Deep Purple carved their niche in hard rock royalty with a heavy guitar-driven sound. The monstrous riff that opened 'Smoke on the Water' became the first thing many aspiring guitarists learned to play. Songs like 'Woman from Tokyo' and 'Highway Star' epitomized the screaming rock vocalist of the '70s, and many of Deep Purple's finest tracks were graced by Ian Gillan's voice (who also lent his wail to the Jesus Christ Superstar album.) David Coverdale, who later sang in Whitesnake, also provided front man duties for a while. Both 'Space Truckin'' and 'Highway Star' were party favorites, the latter's breakneck ... |

Out Of Our Heads (UK)(more) »rank: 120619by: The Rolling Stones, Rolling Stones
:Album Description:Early Stones recordings don't get much better than this. Firmly established as celebrities, the band began to use the pandemonium they inspired as an artistic source. Nowhere is their initial reaction to fame and music business drama more apparent than in the humorous, mocking 'The Under Assistant West Coast Promotion Man,' in which the Stones effectively skewer the sleazier side of the record industry. Naturally, this will always be known as the album that features the original version of 'Satisfaction,' which would remain the band's signature tune throughout their career, but that's really just the tip of the iceberg. Equally effective as ... |

On the Border(more) »rank: 108687by: Eagles
:Album Description:Limited edition 'Vinyl Replica Series' released by WEA/Asia to coincide with their Autumn 2004 tour there. The album package is specially redesigned to resemble the original vinyl packaging. Originally released in 1974. Digitally Remastered. essential recording:On their third album, the Eagles finally produced a No. 1 hit with 'The Best of My Love,' but most of On the Border is marked by tough rockers, not sweet ballads. 'Already Gone' is a brusque kiss-off and 'Midnight Flyer' a bluegrass kicker, while 'James Dean' recalls the '50s rebel icon, and the title track reflects on paranoia and creeping Big Brotherism. The Eagles also ... |

Shades 1968-1998(more) »rank: 19529by: Deep Purple
: :Deep Purple were grander than grand, with a sound that was kept huge by the band's avoidance of then-popular thematic explorations. They stayed the loud-and-hard course, as evidenced by this lavish four-CD box. A photo-rich booklet accompanies a host of early cover singles ('Kentucky Woman' and 'River Deep-Mountain High' among them), a couple of demos ('Shadows,' 'Love Help Me'), and some belated 1980s and '90s cash-ins on the band's popularity in Japan. But, of course, the meat of this set is heaped on the first three CDs, each of which holds blasting rockers aplenty, including the Beatles' 'Help' turned into cranked-up faux psychedelia. ... |

Live Licks (topless cover)(more) »rank: 63465by: The Rolling Stones
: :The Rolling Stones have built themselves a fine conundrum with this double-disc anthology culled from performances on their 40th Anniversary tour of 2002-03, releasing arguably their most comprehensive and compelling live recording at a moment in history when it seems to matter least. The Stones' by now overwhelming spate of live albums has consistently been the most disappointing part of their considerable oeuvre, but the band--particularly the chunky/bluesy twin guitar locomotion of Keith Richards and Ron Wood--are in a form here that rivals the halcyon touring behind Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street. Befitting this tour's anniversary aims, they tackle material that ... |

Continuing a fortuitous tradition of capturing the Sondheim legacy on video recordings, this performance was filmed before a live audience in Los Angeles during the 1982 national tour. Almost 20 years later, Hearn returned to the role opposite Patti LuPone in an acclaimed concert production. But Sweeney Todd is an especially compelling experience in this 1982 version, complete with the clever staging tricks (e.g., the barber's chair) and as close to the original cast as we're likely to see. --David Horiuchi
