#1 Record/Radio City(more) »rank: 9400by: Big Star
: :A two-for-one combo of the first two Big Star albums (they only recorded three). Heard side by side, #1 Record and Radio City only add further testament to Big Star's seminal greatness. On the first album, Chris Bell and Alex Chilton share songwriting credit, though each brings a remarkably different sensibility to the band: Bell creates pure pop nuggets ('Feel') while Chilton swaggers with reckless melancholy ('Ballad of El Goodo,' 'Thirteen.'). After Bell's departure, Chilton took control of the helm for Radio City, and what a ride it is. While not abandoning Bell's penchant for pop, Radio City careens wildly through some of ... |

Girlfriend(more) »rank: 8995by: Matthew Sweet
:Album Details:Japanese Re-Release Containing Bonus Tracks. :After being dropped from A&M Records thanks to Girlfriend's rough edges, Matthew Sweet might hardly have expected great commercial success when another label brought the album out toward the end of 1991. But an alternative-welcome climate at rock radio stations, along with undeniably great songs and aggressive lead-guitar work by ex-Voidoid Robert Quine and former Television member Richard Lloyd, made the disc an eventual gold-selling hit. Years later, Girlfriend's probe of romance found, lost, and found again continues to sound fresh and daring. --Rickey Wright |

Twin Cinema(more) »rank: 10589by: The New Pornographers
:Album Description:The third album from Vancouver's pop maestros continues to feature Neko Case and Dan Bejar (Destroyer), as well as new vocalists Kathryn Calder and Nora O'Connor. These songs veer more toward the rocking and the personal than the sugar of earlier works. Chief singer/songwriter A.C. Newman has absorbed not just the mechanics of classic songwriting, but the heart, while indulging his admiration of demented current bands like Fiery Furnaces and Frog Eyes. Expect to hear influences from The Moody Blues, Tubeway Army, Wings, Eno, The Stranglers, 10cc, and other greats, all filtered through Newman's warped worldview. :Imagine a loose consortium of musicians ... |

: : Dandy Warhols Photos More from Dandy Warhols The Dandy Warhols Come Down Odditorium or Warlords of Mars Welcome to the Monkey House Amazon.com's Best of 2000:'I wear my influences like a f***ing badge,' proclaims lead singer-songwriter Courtney Taylor regarding Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia. But while the Dandy Warhols liberally steal Rolling Stones riffs, Iggy Pop vocals, Britpop sonic surfing, and even Burt Bacharach horn sections, they give it back in spades, delivering one of the best rock albums of 2000: a masterpiece of sex, beauty, strife, and wry, raunchy-cool attitude. --Beth Massa Amazon.com:The long hiatus that led to ... |

The Definitive Collection(more) »rank: 42953by: Bay City Rollers
: : The mid-70s belonged to a group of hopelessly plaid Scotsmen who named themselves after a northern Michigan resort town. With an affect on fans that resembled Beatlemania in terms of screaming, fainting, and pledges of undying love, the Bay City Rollers enjoyed a string of U.K. pop hits along with modest American success. In retrospect, the band's music is still sugary enough to give listeners a toothache; however, there is a certain charming innocence to tunes like 'Saturday Night,' 'Summer Love Sensation,' and (of course) 'Shang-a-Lang.' Boy-band nostalgia, anyone? --S. Duda |

Continuing a fortuitous tradition of capturing the Sondheim legacy on video recordings, this performance was filmed before a live audience in Los Angeles during the 1982 national tour. Almost 20 years later, Hearn returned to the role opposite Patti LuPone in an acclaimed concert production. But Sweeney Todd is an especially compelling experience in this 1982 version, complete with the clever staging tricks (e.g., the barber's chair) and as close to the original cast as we're likely to see. --David Horiuchi
