: :Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621) is one of the few composers of the Northern Netherlands who enjoyed an international reputation. Even during his lifetime, he attracted students from far and wide, who came to learn from him, copy his music and adopt his style. On returning to their native countries, they would not only take back a pile of Sweelinck's compositions but also a deep respect for this modest 'Orpheus of Amsterdam'. Sweelinck undertook and completed the massive effort of composing musical settings for all 150 Psalms, using the rhymed French-language versions by Marot and De Bèze. In both the Psalms and Cantiones ...

: :Boxed in a sturdy, handsomely produced lift-top container, this set of six perennial favorites from the Harmonia Mundi catalog is a beauty. It seeks to catch 10 centuries of sacred music, and it does that and much more. Each of the recordings is lauded, some of them intensely favored, by fans of early music. The Deller Consort's Gregorian Chant collection, for example, has been around for decades, delighting listeners with its austerity and methodical rhythms. It's a prize, as is the inestimable Marcel Peres and Ensemble Organum's 1986 recording of Josquin Desprez's Missa pange lingua (available separately as a single CD), by now ...

Beyonce's London fans go crazy when the Destiny's Child beauty, on her first solo international tour, descends to a massive stage while suspended, upside down, from a wire. After a delicate landing, the star embarks on a set of recent hits immersed in complicated arrangements, including the Arabic sound of "Baby Boy" and "Naughty Girl," the chunky, hypnotic funk of "Hip Hop Star," and Beyonce: Live at Wembley's best performance, the powerful "Work It Out," in which the diva is at her clearest, jazziest, and most soulful. Not everything works. The bottom falls out of "Gift from Virgo," "Be with You" is forgettable, and Beyonce's stage patter needs polish. But a Destiny's Child medley accompanied by only a DJ is innovative and fun, "Summertime" proves a breezy dance number, and "Crazy in Love" is bolstered by what sounds like the old Stax horns. A CD featuring a few remixes is included with the DVD. --Tom Keogh
