Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Pete Seeger's recording career covers more than 60 years, so a single-CD collection is bound to leave out more than a few worthy songs. But the 16 selections on Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits include indispensable Seeger-composed classics like 'Turn! Turn! Turn!,' 'Bells of Rhymney,' and an abbreviated a cappella version of 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone?' Also included are songs Seeger popularized, such as 'Wimoweh,' which he learned from Solomon Linda's original South African recording in the 1940s, and 'Guantanamera,' which he picked up from some children at a Catskills summer camp where he was singing. All of the performances are drawn from his 1960s tenure at Columbia Records--only the first 12 tracks were included on the original 1967 package--and include both studio and live recordings. This CD features only a small fraction of the songs that could legitimately be called Seeger's greatest hits, but because most of these selections are so important to his career, this set can be thought of as the greatest of his greatest hits. --Michael Simmons

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - * Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits. ...
Really nice CD for a general overview of Pete Seeger's music through the years. I'm still looking for a CD that has the music from the DVD "Power of Song" on it. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Wonderful! ...
Pete Seeger is a national treasure but also is our national conscience. In these songs and in nearly everything else he does Pete holds up a mirror to us.
"Waist deep in the big muddy" is as relevant today as it ever was.
Every song on this is great but since they are live recordings sometimes the recording quality falls a little short. That shouldn't dissuade anyone because Pete Seeger is probably always been at his best with a live audience.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - * Memories ...
Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits is a collection of songs that were sung in the 60's. Listening to the album brought me back to a time of hope for a kinder, fairer world. Some songs were serious and some were just fun.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits ...
This recording was one of my favorites. When I sold all of my LPs, I was so sure I'd replace every single one w/ a CD. Of course I didn't. But the PBS show on Seeger reminded me that I wanted to hear these songs again.

If Seeger's story, his patriotism, or dignity and decency moved you, this is a good 'starter' for a Seeger collection.

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
