: :As always, Patty Loveless connects with listeners, singing about their joys and sorrows. Sleepless Nights is her newly recorded homage to the classic country hits of the '50s, '60s, and '70s. She personally selected each song, country classics first made popular by George Jones, Hank Locklin, Porter Wagoner, Webb Pierce, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Conway Twitty. Born and bred country, Patty's pure crooning on these favorites is yearning and melancholy, enhanced only by sparse accompaniment. The new sessions feature several legendary band members: guitarist Harold Bradley, who played on the original hits of Patsy Cline and Roy Orbison; blind pianist Pig ...

: :O Santa, where art thou? Patty Loveless's big voice almost upstages such stately hymns here as 'Away in a Manager' and 'Silent Night.' That said, this is one of 2002's most satisfying Christmas albums regardless of genre. Rich with harmony vocals and deft acoustic instrumentation, the CD shines bright with unexpected arrangements ('Little Drummer Boy' sounds like an old-time country tune transplanted to Ireland), while words cannot describe the simply beautiful sounds of 'Carol of the Bells' and 'Silver Bells,' rendered with fiddles, Dobro, strumming guitars, and spirited singing. Spread the joy and buy a couple extra for the in-laws and neighbors. --Martin ...

: :Maybe they should have subtitled this album O Sister, Where Art Thou? Like the music from the Coen brothers' O Brother... movie, Songcatcher celebrates the emotional purity of mountain music, the acoustic balladry of the Appalachians--only this soundtrack features an all-female assemblage. Among the luminaries who shine the brightest: Rosanne Cash, who sets the tone with the album-opening 'Fair and Tender Ladies'; Julie Miller, whose original 'All My Tears' could pass as an old spiritual; Patty Loveless, who returns to her Kentucky roots with 'Sounds of Loneliness'; and Gillian Welch, who leads an a cappella rendition of 'Wind and Rain.' : 's Best of 2001:Pikeville, Kentucky, native Patty Loveless has occasionally acknowledged her mountain-music roots on her frequently excellent albums of mainstream country. Hear, for instance, the pained, stoic version of Carter Stanley's 'I'll Never Grow Tired of You' on Loveless's 1988 breakthrough, Honky Tonk Angel. Like too few of her 21st-century post-hillbilly peers could do, the singer makes Mountain Soul--an all-acoustic sampling of classics and a handful of new songs--far more than a nod to the style. Loveless's clear voice and sensitivity to narrative lyrics have made ballads her most fertile ground, and here she turns in as consistently affecting a disc as ...

: :Robert Duvall's triple-threat (producer/writer/director) 1997 film about a fundamentalist Texas preacher whose fiery spirituality and good works are nearly unraveled by his decidedly human lusts is remarkable for a number of things--the star's non-judgmental approach to Christianity undercuts easy stereotyping and his choice in music nicely smudges the modern, artificially drawn boundaries between country and gospel. It's a collection of music that shows what rich diversity there is in music that's been largely marginalized by mainstream marketeers. Highlights include Lyle Lovett's rousing 'I'm a Soldier In the Army of the Lord,' 'In the Garden' by Johnny Cash, and The Carter Family returning to ...

With the help of producer/songwriters William Orbit, Mark Ronson, Jerry Meehan, Joey Negro and Soul Mekanik (plus guests as diverse as The Pet Shop Boys and Lily Allen), Robbie Williams has achieved a most radical transformation. Gone is the slick, pop-rogue of yesteryear: in his place is a new Robbie that raps, embraces club beats and (mostly) favours personal indulgence over cheesy, universal pop. Recent single "Rudebox", all electronic riddims and slack-rap vocal delivery, was just the start of this transition. The rest of Rudebox completes the remarkable overhaul with several eclectic covers - from Manu Chau's "Bongo Bong" and Lewis Taylor's underground classic "Lovelight," to subversive takes on The Human League ("Louise"), My Robot Friend ("We're The Pet Shop Boys") and Stephen Duffy ("Kiss Me") – and tracks such as "Keep On", "Good Doctor" and "Dickhead", which confirm his quite bewildering quest to becoming a comedic, Staffs-accented version of The Streets.

Slightly more serious are his attempts at what he describes as 'wonky pop'. Songs like "Viva Life On Mars", his odd ode to Madonna ("She's Madonna"), the dark "The Actor" and catchy club-hit-in-waiting "Never Touch That Switch" all feature innovative production and interesting arrangements. Toward the end, we get "The 80s" and "The 90s", two more amusing "rap"-tracks that cover the singer's adolescence and his Take That years respectively; these underline the nostalgic, end-of-an-era feel of the LP. Audaciously eclectic and admirably upfront, Rudebox is overtly a form of personal catharsis. Not all the experiments work, but they're better than you might think, and now they're off his chest it'll be interesting to see where the new Robbie Williams heads to next.--Paul Sullivan

Greatest Hits chronicles the remarkable journey of Mr Robert Williams, from being the "fat dancer from Take That" (c. Noel Gallagher) to the multi-million pound jewel in EMI’s crown. Assembled in chronological order, all the hits are here, except for his initial solo outing "Freedom", and it’s interesting to see how his sound evolves from wannabe Britpop buffoon on the sub-Oasis pubrock of "Old Before I Die" to the subtle captivating melodies of "Feel" and "Come Undone". There are so many great tracks that it’s impossible to list them all, but highlights have to be the barnstorming "Let Me Entertain You", the bouncy, floor-filling "Rock DJ" and the song that madeth the man, "Angels". The two latest additions to his canon--"Radio" and "Misunderstood" clearly have one eye on the past, the other on the future – with the latter an instant classic Robbie ballad from the Bridget Jones 2 soundtrack and the former a foray into the world of electro pop that sounds like a warped Human League track from the 1980s. This has to be Robbie’s forte, his ability to make great pop records that always sound fresh and full of energy. Every home should have a copy of this album, and chances are, by the end of 2004, most of them will. -- Melanie Wilkin
