Editorial Review:

Description:
Pat Metheny is one of the most original and distinctive guitarists of modern times. Together with long time collaborator and keyboards player Lyle Mays he founded the Pat Metheny Group in 1978. Instantly successful, they have established themselves at the forefront of jazz-rock fusion with a succession of best selling albums and sell out world tours. This new DVD, filmed in late 2005, features the full concert version of his most recent album Â'The Way UpÂ', which earned Pat Metheny Group their 10th Grammy Award® and Metheny personally his 17th.

Tracklisting 1. Opening 2. Part One 3. Part Two 4. Part Three

Bonus Features Interview with Pat Metheny (22 mins). Band Biographies.

Amazon.com:
Pat Metheny fans know by now what to expect from a recorded performance by the guitarist and his group, and it's all here on The Way Up – Live: superb, versatile musicianship, mixing virtuoso soloing with telepathic ensemble interplay and sustained moments of majestic passion and intensity; intricate rhythms and time signatures; sweeping textures punctuated by some memorable melodic passages; and, from a purely technical standpoint, superior sound and visuals. Yet The Way Up is a bit different, and a good deal more challenging. First heard on the group's 2005 CD of the same name (this performance was recorded in Seoul, South Korea), it's a long, ambitious piece of music consisting of four lengthy parts, all played without pause. For a live audience, it's more like taking in a classical music concert than a jazz or rock show; there are melodies and grooves, but no tunes, per se, as the piece mostly lacks the song-like appeal of much of the Metheny Group's best known work. Composed by Metheny and Lyle Mays, his longtime partner and keyboardist, the music constantly evolves over the course of its 70 minutes (Metheny himself changes guitars like Cher switches costumes), to the point where you might not actually recall much of it when it's over. But you'll certainly remember the experience of watching and listen to these seven brilliant musicians at work; and like the Seoul audience, you will be wowed. An interview with Metheny is the sole bonus feature. --Sam Graham

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Anything less than 5 stars is nonsense. ...
Mere words can't describe the dazzling musical odyssey that is this DVD. I'd like to know what planet these guys are from. I may want to visit some day.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - * Overproduction ruins it for me ...
I have to say I'm really surprised that nobody else has complained about this but I felt the camera cuts were OBNOXIOUSLY frequent to the point that I honestly can't watch the dvd. It sounds ridiculous but I actually recorded the audio into my computer so I can just listen to the concert. The camera cuts to a different performer an average of once every bar through the entire concert and it is common as the intensity picks up for the camera to cut as frequently as every beat. We have to be talking thousands of cuts over the length of the performance. Do we need this? I think the average jazz fan has a longer attention span than most; why do producers always feel the need to "inject" excitement into live music dvd's when the good performers (like these guys) can do that themselves?

Speaking of the performance-as you would expect and as seemingly agreed upon by everyone else, the musicianship and performances are outstanding. Nothing left to be desired there. I really enjoy listening to the CD I made of it!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * Metheny's Musical Magic! ...
Once again, Pat Metheny and his amazing bandmates prove that they are the greatest group of today and possibly, ever. If performances like this one are put in a time capsule or launched on the Voyager, future generations or other life-forms may think we had SOME good things about us. Buy this.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * A great performance ...
If your looking a visual experience than unless your a musician your probably going to be disappointed. This is an audio experience. These guys play and that's all they do. But the playing is an experience. The This Way Up CD is a masterpiece and to see that it can be played live is a real treat. Sound wise I have to use Dolby Digtal 5.1 II since I have an older receiver (No HDMI) so I using the optical output from a PS3 and it sounds great. The 5.1 mix is also very good. Honestly I bought the DVD so I could get a 5.1 mix of This Way Up. But the live performance is an improvement over the CD.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - * THE WAY UP - THE ONLY WAY ...
A great DVD, from a great album, from a great musician, that I had the chance to see live, in Portugal. It's not easy to put in words what you feel when have the chance to see and ear the sounds that come out from Pat's guitars and imagination...those who like him like I do know what I'm talking about.

The Academy Award winner for Best Picture, Best Director Robert Zemeckis, and Best Actor Tom Hanks, this unlikely story of a slow-witted but good-hearted man somehow at the center of the pivotal events of the 20th century is a funny and heartwarming epic. Hanks plays the title character, a shy Southern boy in love with his childhood best friend (Robin Wright) who finds that his ability to run fast takes him places. As an All-Star football player he meets John F. Kennedy; as a soldier in Vietnam he's a war hero; and as a world champion Ping-Pong player he's hailed by Richard Nixon. Becoming a successful shrimp-boat captain, he still yearns for the love of his life, who takes a quite different and much sadder path in life. The visual effects incorporating Hanks into existing newsreel footage is both funny and impressive, but the heart of the film lies in its sweet love story and in the triumphant performance of Hanks as an unassuming soul who savors the most from his life and times. --Robert Lane

Gina Prince-Bythewood, a former college athlete, puts a spin on this one-on-one tale of Love and Basketball. Sanaa Lathan (The Best Man) is the fiercely driven, hot-tempered Monica, a tomboy who gives her all for basketball. Omar Epps (The Mod Squad) is Quincy, an NBA player's son who has pro dreams of his own. Next-door neighbors since first grade, they start as rivals (she flabbergasts the boy by outplaying him in a game of driveway pickup) and age into best friends and lovers. The romantic complications follow a familiar game plan, but the film throws a fascinating spotlight onto the contrast between men's and women's basketball. While Quincy plays college ball on huge courts to cheering, sold-out crowds, we see Monica's sweat, tears, and sheer physical dedication in front of tiny audiences in small gyms and second-rate auditoriums.

The story is pointedly set in the late 1980s, years before the establishment of the WNBA, so Monica's prospects for pro ball lie exclusively in Europe, while Quincy steps into the pros at home. It's a pleasure to see a character as passionate and fully developed as Monica, and Lathan gives a fiery portrayal (she had never played ball before the film, but you'd never tell from her performance). Prince-Bythewood favors her struggle over Quincy's and opens our eyes to her unique challenges with a sharp, savvy contrast. Alfre Woodard costars as Monica's harping mom (always trying to get her to be more ladylike) and Dennis Haysbert is Quincy's philandering father. Hoops fan Spike Lee produced. --Sean Axmaker
