:Description:This program is a live recording of Alfred Kirchner's production of Mussorgsky's 'Khovanshchina' from the Vienna State Opera. Conducted by Claudio Abbado and featuring top vocalists from Russia and the Eastern Bloc in all the leading roles, this production was hailed as a triumph. Arguably Mussorgsky's greatest work, 'Khovanshchina' is an opera of immense power and humanity set in the time when Peter the Great assumed power in Russia. :Mussorgsky died before finishing this epic treatment of the 17th-century clash between Russian conservatives (the boyars and the Orthodox 'Old Believers') and the progressive, Westernizing reformers led by Peter the Great. Among the composers ...

:Description:This magnificent production of Verdi's much-loved masterpiece was a triumphant success when it opened at La Scala in December 1985, and Luciano Pavarotti's long-awaited performance as Radames--his first in Italy--was greeted with rapturous applause. In this live recording of that same production, Pavarotti heads an exceptional cast with Ghena Dimitrova, Maria Chiara, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Paata Burchuladze, and Juan Pons all in peak form. Lorin Maazel's reading of the score shows a rare understanding of Verdi's music. Verdi wrote Aida in response to a request by the Khedive of Egypt for an opera with authentic Egyptian flavor to open the Cairo Opera House in ...

starring: Gabriele Schnaut, Robert Tear, Paata Burchuladze, Johan Botha, Cristina Gallardo Domas
directed by: Brian Large

:Description:Turandot has a unique place among Puccini’s works because of its complexity, the intertwining of the exotic and the fairy-tale, of tragedy and comedy. At the heart of the opera is the psychological exploration of the eponymous character which in her ambivalence of enchanting beauty and cruel nature differs from all of Puccini’s earlier heroines. In musical terms Turandot has all the marks of a unique work. Not only did it take longer to complete than the other operas – Puccini did not live to see its completion - but in none of his other works did he show so convincingly his ability ...

: essential video:La Scala went all out for its 1986 production of this grandest of grand operas, with a strong cast and, most important for a video recording, a larger-than-life staging. The Triumph Scene in Act II is by no means Aida's only attraction, but it is the part that makes the strongest and most lasting impression and it is the visual and musical climax of this production. Stage director Luca Ronconi brings on a procession to dwarf all processions: looted treasures, heroic statuary, miserable captives struggling under the lash of whip-bearing slave drivers. On par with these visuals is Lorin Maazel's first-class ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
