Wanted! The Outlaws(more) »rank: 2157by: Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter, Tompall Glaser
: :Less successful when it's sentimental (Waylon Jennings' 'My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys') than when it's wry (Willie Nelson's myth-puncturing 'Me and Paul'), this cash-in compilation of previously released cuts was just in time to grab the first platinum record ever awarded a country album. It's not bad, but both Jennings' contemporaneous Dreaming My Dreams and Nelson's Red Headed Stranger are more nuanced tastes of the good-bad-but-not-evil-ol'-boy lifestyle. (Not to mention much of Tompall Glaser's own Outlaw compilation.) This 1996 CD reissue adds nine more tracks from the era as well as a new Jennings-and-Nelson version of Steve Earle's 'Nowhere Road.' --Rickey Wright |

Light of the Stable(more) »rank: 1927by: Emmylou Harris
:Album Description:Light of the Stable debuted in 1979, with a title track featuring backing vocals from Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, and Dolly Parton. The sublime Rodney Crowell-penned 'Angel Eyes,' composed specially for this album, features Rick Skaggs on mandolin and Skaggs and Willie Nelson on vocal harmony, and is just one of many highlights. This radiant acoustic masterpiece--graced throughout with the presence of stellar guests--features both contemporary and traditional gems, and is now expanded with three newly recorded songs. :First released in 1979, Light of the Stable has survived the passage of time and received much acclaim over the years. A Very Special Acoustic Christmas(more) »rank: 1328by: Various Artists
: :Every year since 1987, there's been A Very Special Christmas record of one sort or another, the proceeds of which go to the Special Olympics. This year's A Very Special Acoustic Christmas is as great as any previous year's efforts, even though it's deliciously unplugged. Country music superstars like Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, and Wynonna are balanced by such legendary country and bluegrass figures as Earl Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs, and Willie Nelson (doing a version of Charles Brown's 'Please Come Home for Christmas' that's almost as haunting as Brown's). Throw in the father of newgrass Sam Bush's sparkling 'Let it Snow! ... |

Emotionalism(more) »rank: 1765by: The Avett Brothers
: :Though the banjo might seem to relegate this decidedly non-bluegrass trio to the alt-country fringes, the buoyant melodies and heart-tugging harmonies on the album-opening 'Die Die Die' and 'Will You Return?' owe more to the early Beatles. Despite the stripped-down, largely acoustic arrangements, the 14 cuts here cover an impressively expansive musical terrain, with 'Pretty Girl from Chile' and 'Pretty Girl from San Diego' full of twists and surprises. Elsewhere there are echoes of influence from the Band, the Burritos, the Everlys, and beyond, but the music of this North Carolina family band refuses to be pigeonholed. --Don McLeese |

One Hell Of a Ride (4-CD Box Set)(more) »rank: 1235by: Willie Nelson
:Album Description:This box contains a wealth of American music, plus a couple of jewels--Django Reinhardt's 'Nuages' and Jimmy Cliff's 'The Harder They Come'--from beyond these shores. Here are 100 songs commemorating Willie Nelson's incredible journey by going full circle. 'When I've Sang My Last Hillbilly Song,' leading off Disc One, was recorded in 1954 or '55; it is reprised on Disc Four's final track, updated in 2007. Between those years Nelson, a Depression era kid who grew up dirt poor in Abbott, Texas, became one of the world's most recognizable figures, in the music/entertainment business or otherwise. One Hell Of A Ride is, ... |

Gordon Lightfoot - Live in Reno(more) »rank: 6109from: Image Entertainment
: :Live in Reno is a solid overview of an admirable career, even if this Gordon Lightfoot is not what he once was. The singer-songwriter, 61 when the 90-minute show was recorded in April 2000, looks gaunt, and his distinctive voice is on the frail side. Still, he has accumulated a remarkable catalog of material over the course of some four decades, and nearly all of the biggies are among the 22 songs performed here by Lightfoot and his four-piece band, from the early classics popularized by other artists ('For Lovin' Me,' 'Early Morning Rain') to his own best-known hits ('If You Could Read ... |

Amazing Grace: 40 Treasured Hymns(more) »rank: 2527by: Tennessee Ernie Ford
: :Tennessee Ernie Ford's warm, commanding baritone lives on most dramatically in his vivid rendition of the Merle Travis-penned coal miner's song 'Sixteen Tons,' which topped the national charts in 1955. But by the 1960s, Ford, a leading entertainer in his time and host of an NBC-TV variety show that ran from 1956 to 1961, had turned heavily to sacred music. By the time of his death in 1991, he'd recorded no fewer than 81 albums of gospel and spiritual music. Some of Ford's most memorable hymns are collected in this ample set, which includes both the familiar ('How Great Thou Art,' 'Rock of ... |

The story is pointedly set in the late 1980s, years before the establishment of the WNBA, so Monica's prospects for pro ball lie exclusively in Europe, while Quincy steps into the pros at home. It's a pleasure to see a character as passionate and fully developed as Monica, and Lathan gives a fiery portrayal (she had never played ball before the film, but you'd never tell from her performance). Prince-Bythewood favors her struggle over Quincy's and opens our eyes to her unique challenges with a sharp, savvy contrast. Alfre Woodard costars as Monica's harping mom (always trying to get her to be more ladylike) and Dennis Haysbert is Quincy's philandering father. Hoops fan Spike Lee produced. --Sean Axmaker
