The Way I Should(more) »rank: 12397by: Iris DeMent
: :Iris DeMent's 1994 My Life is the best country album released in the 1990s. Yet with its gorgeous string-band arrangements and its heartbreaking tales of home and family, it's so timeless it could just as easily have been released in the '30s as the '90s. By contrast, there's no mistaking which decade DeMent's album, The Way I Should, comes from, with its crossover-country sound and its references to Calvin Klein, MTV, child abuse, 'quality time,' and Beavis and Butt-head. Nonetheless DeMent's twangy Arkansas soprano and detail-filled lyrics are as sharply original as ever. DeMent's voice seems to glow on 'This Kind of Happy,' ... |

Spirit(more) »rank: 41934by: Willie Nelson
: essential recording:As with Willie Nelson's '70s Atlantic breakthroughs, the self-written and self-produced collection is something of a concept album, though its not driven by as strong a narrative as Phases & Stages and Red-Headed Stranger. This is simple declarative account of a man abandoned by the great love of his life. He reflects upon his loss, expresses his fears and desires, and searches the heavens for solace. He finds some and gives thanks. The band (Nelson backed by fiddle, piano, and second guitar) plays a wistful waltz and life goes on, though the end is in sight. Horse Legends(more) »rank: 7898by: Michael Martin Murphey
: :The biggest hit of Michael Martin Murphey's career was his 1975 No. 3 single, 'Wildfire,' a musical fable about a pony who roamed the Nebraska plains after his owner died. With a cheap romanticism borrowed from Jonathan Livingston Seagull and an acoustic-pop arrangement borrowed from a hundred fellow James Taylor imitators, the song epitomized the sensitive soft-rock of the mid-'70s. The number has been re-recorded for Murphey's 1997 album, The Horse Legends, a collection of 10 songs about horses. Most of the other tracks reflect the same facile myth-making and easy-listening/folk that made Murphey a star more than two decades ago. The singer ... |

The story is pointedly set in the late 1980s, years before the establishment of the WNBA, so Monica's prospects for pro ball lie exclusively in Europe, while Quincy steps into the pros at home. It's a pleasure to see a character as passionate and fully developed as Monica, and Lathan gives a fiery portrayal (she had never played ball before the film, but you'd never tell from her performance). Prince-Bythewood favors her struggle over Quincy's and opens our eyes to her unique challenges with a sharp, savvy contrast. Alfre Woodard costars as Monica's harping mom (always trying to get her to be more ladylike) and Dennis Haysbert is Quincy's philandering father. Hoops fan Spike Lee produced. --Sean Axmaker
