: :While The Scent of Light is Ottmar Liebert + Luna Negra's first studio album featuring the band since 2004's La Semana, the recording picks up on the spacial sensibility of the recent binaural CD Up Close by spreading the sound across the full stereo field to create superb listening depth. While Ottmar has stepped away from the recent minimalism of his 2007 Grammy nominated solo album One Guitar, you still sense the high resolution, beautiful clarity, and live combo dynamic. It's a layered recording, with the multiple guitars, basses, keyboards & percussion subtly exchanging altitude, rooms, and dimensions. The excellent detailing and ...

: :Last Summer Ottmar and his group Luna Negra gathered around the Fritz (Neumann) Head in his private adobe studio in Santa Fe, and recorded nine songs. No smoke and mirrors, just a virtuoso performance with a spacial accuracy that suggests that you are actually there in the room, maybe an unseen player in the band. As Stephen Duros (2nd guitar) says, 'Best seat in the house, man.' Any change in volume or left-to-right or front-to-back movement was created by the musicians moving around the dummy head. The goal of performers is always to capture the essence of live performance, and binaural recording ...

: :For the last five years, guitarist Ottmar Liebert has been reviewing and reconsidering his career: variously re-recording, remixing, and remastering his older songs. Initially, La Semana, which translates as 'The Week,' sounds like a stylistic return to that early sound. No electronics, orchestras, or smooth jazz combos - only Liebert on multi-tracked guitar with bass, and percussion, just like on Nouveau Flamenco. Songs like Carousel and La Luna feature Liebert's upbeat mix of deft, precisely picked melody and flamenco groove. :For the last five years, guitarist Ottmar Liebert has been regurgitating his career: variously re-recording, remixing, and remastering his older songs. : :'Ambitious' is a word that's inevitably used by music critics to describe Ottmar Liebert's Opium. Spread over two CDs, which also feature text and a variety of photographs, Opium clocks in at more than 125 minutes and affords the German-born guitarist (today a resident of Santa Fe, New Mexico) the broadest possible canvas to express his fascinating artistic vision, one that eludes a concise or simple explanation. Nominated for a Grammy (Best New Age Recording) in 1997, Opium comprises one CD subtitled 'Wide-Eyed,' which features a fairly straightforward presentation of Liebert's elegantly vibrant approach to flamenco-influenced acoustic guitar, and an even more intriguing ...

Little Wing

by: Ottmar Liebert + Luna Negra

: :Flamenco revisionist Ottmar Liebert views Little Wing as a transitional project as he steers himself toward a three-for-one stylistic split. Future recordings, his liner notes tell us, will feature a new accuracy-in-labeling effort. Discs involving his Luna Negra band will feature his familiar flamenco/bossa nova kitchen-sink mix; 'Euphoria' projects will be open to groove/world/ambient textures (think Opium); solo discs will be subdued affairs. Where might he file Little Wing? It easily lands on the quieter side of Liebert's wide-ranging spectrum, offering a pleasant though ultimately modest display of his skills as a player and composer. Four of the tracks, including the appealing title ...

Packing a whopping 22 hours of content on five double-sided discs, Los Angeles Lakers: The Complete History is a treasure trove for fans of the purple and gold. In fact, even the ambitious title doesn't do the set justice, as the opening 2002 documentary traces the franchise to its Minnesota roots and a vintage 1953 feature shows the game's first dominant big man, George Mikan, in action. The glitzier West Coast years--Wilt, West, Magic, Kareem, Shaq, Kobe, et al.--are the primary focus, of course, and this set, one of the first two entries in the NBA Dynasty series (along with the slightly less-substantial Chicago Bulls: The 1990s), collects seven of the highlight videos that were released on VHS (2000 and 2002 were also on DVD), which provide a time-capsule look at each of the championship seasons.

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi

Demons and wizards and bears, oh my! After finding their musical stride with 1971's Look at Yourself, Uriah Heep followed up a year later with this, their first foray into the lyrical realm of dungeons, dragons, and whatnot. David Byron's intermittent falsetto is in full effect by the time the chorus comes thundering in on heavy hits such as "Easy Living" and "Traveler in Time." But the 'ard 'n' 'eavy Brit rockers also had their sensitive side, as evidenced by the more reflective Ken Hensley-penned tracks like "Circle of Hands" and "All My Life." --Billy Grenier
