Night Train(more) »rank: 2281by: Oscar Peterson Trio
: essential recording:This 1962 recording represents Oscar Peterson at his most commercially accommodating, yet his trio with Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen never fails to swing. The program includes such familiar melodies as the title track (which began life as Duke Ellington's 'Happy Go Lucky Local'), 'Georgia on My Mind,' and 'The Honeydripper.' With the notable exception of the gospel-like original 'Hymn to Freedom,' most of the tracks clock in at around three minutes. This reissue contains several alternate takes that were wisely left off the original LP, including such unlikely jazz vehicles as 'Volare' and 'My Heart Belongs to Daddy.' --Rick Mitchell |

Jazz Track. :Stan Getz and Oscar Peterson were both consummate performers, comfortable at any tempo, when they met for this 1957 recording, and they're clearly enjoying one another's skills on ballads and uptempo tunes alike. The group is one of the finest editions of Peterson's trios, with bassist Ray Brown and guitarist Herb Ellis. The Oscar Peterson Trio at the Stratford Shakespearean Festival(more) »rank: 19085by: Oscar Peterson Trio
:Album Description:Japanese remastered reissue of 1956 album, packaged in a limited edition miniature LP sleeve. Verve. 2004. :Here's a jazz trio par excellence, making full use in 1956 of the setting's possibilities of airtight collaboration and shifting emphasis. Oscar Peterson and his classic trio-mates, Herb Ellis on guitar and Ray Brown on bass, heading straight at a lively selection, never hint that they might have liked a drummer along. The model, of course, is Nat King Cole's drumless trio, but Peterson also had been inspired by the rococo and rapid fire of Art Tatum. With breathtaking, huge-handed technique, he unerringly swings deep and ... |

Very Tall(more) »rank: 92052by: Oscar Peterson Trio
: :What's this? Milt Jackson, the tasteful, restrained, and subtle vibraphone player meets Oscar Peterson, the busy, blazing, and emphatic pianist, for the first time? The 1961 pairing works like a charm for two reasons. First, each player adapts rather nicely to the other's style--Jackson is a bit more spirited and active overall, Peterson is a bit more low-key and leisurely (especially in support of Jackson)--without dramatically altering his own sound. Secondly and most importantly, both share a great passion for the blues and have the ability to translate this love with a balance of technical prowess and deep emotion. With the opener 'On ... |

DVD features
Yes, the unrated edition of The Dukes of Hazzard has nudity... but no, it's not of Jessica Simpson, but topless sorority girls. There are also two sets--"PG-13" and "unrated"--of deleted scenes and bloopers. The four minutes of unrated deleted scenes (supplementing the 25 minutes of "PG-13" deleted scenes) include more sorority girls and a menage à trois for Johnny Knoxville . The five minutes of unrated bloopers (the same amount as the "PG-13" bloopers) feature a few more girls but mostly bad language. Featurettes discuss the Daisy Duke short shorts (and show how you can make your own), car stunts, and the making of the movie (narrated by a cast member of the original TV series). --David Horiuchi
