: : If you're looking for a single classical/pops Christmas album you can play year after year, Erich Kunzel's Christmas with the Pops might just be it. At the helm of his familiar Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and accompanied by a full roster of guest stars, Kunzel steps through 70 minutes of mostly traditional favorites for orchestra with and without chorus (a children's chorus and bell choir are also on hand). The guest stars are Doc Severinsen ('The Christmas Song'), Rosemary Clooney ('White Christmas,' 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'), Toni Tenille ('The Christmas Waltz'), Sherrill Milnes ('Go Tell It on the Mountain'), ... |

Magnolia: Music from the Motion Picture(more) »rank: 5719by: Aimee Mann, Supertramp, Jon Brion
: :The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ('Build That Wall,' 'You Do,' 'Driving Sideways') do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for 'Momentum' are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. Only Mann's cover of the Harry Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit 'One' backfires, as ... |

Little Miss Sunshine(more) »rank: 7496by: DeVotchKa
: :Don't be fooled by the 'various artists' credited as performing on this soundtrack: the CD actually has a rather uniform tone, and mercifully it's a lovely one. Composer Mychael Danna is paired with the Denver band DeVotchKa, who perform his score and offer a few tunes of their own. Making excellent use of strings, tuba, and squeezebox, they set a mood that echoes the movie's warmly idiosyncratic one. On top of that, it's hard not to like DeVotchKa's singer Nick Urata, whose high-lonesome croon falls somewhere between Roy Orbison and the Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt. Sensitive indie troubadour Sufjan Stevens contributes ... |

High Fidelity(more) »rank: 3891by: Various Artists
: 's Best of 2000:Like a great mix tape, the soundtrack to High Fidelity feels like it was assembled by a true music fanatic. Interspersing selections from cult favorites both old (Love, the 13th Floor Elevators) and new (Smog, Stereolab), it provides a window into the mind of the film's main character, a record store owner who's better able to express his love for a rare 45 than for his longtime girlfriend. --Steven Stolder Amazon.com:Nick Hornby's novel about a middle-aged, obsessive record-store owner and his struggle with growing up in an adult world indifferent to the finer points of soul music was ... |

Life Is Beautiful (La Vita E Bella)(more) »rank: 11071by: Nicola Piovani
: :One of 1998's better soundtracks also follows the most simple of formulas. Nicola Piovani's score for Life Is Beautiful is an impressionistic soundtrack at its finest--a delicious mix that sounds inspired by both simple folk melodies and Morricone's Cinema Paradiso score. Throughout, Piovani's themes are like a kid in candy store: bright-eyed and innocent. Tension is gradually introduced on tracks like 'Il Treno Nel Buio,' but ultimately this score is light and pleasant. The lone vocal cut, Monserrat Caballe singing on 'Barcarolle,' just makes this disc seem all the more Italian. Piovani hasn't created an epic score, but he has accentuated ... |
