: :M’Bemba translates to 'grandfather' and this perhaps reflects the artist being at a peak of maturity, suspended between two generations, old enough to know exactly who he is and young enough to do something about it. Certainly, Keita has been demonstrably experiencing a mid-life renaissance, turning out such consistently masterly work that even longtime listeners are left scrambling for superlatives. Here, he has achieved yet another peak of invention while his celebrated tenor voice has never sounded more fluid and magical. The largely acoustic back-up players are also well worth noting; guitarists Ousmane Kouyate and Kante Manfila sit in on several tracks, joining ...

:Album Details:Debut Album from the Son of Afrobeat King Fela Kuti. 's Best of 2000:Sure, Femi Kuti may not be adding any dramatic innovations to his father's patented Afrobeat grooves, but there are subtle modifications. More than that, however, the younger Kuti still has to execute the music's dynamic rhythms and buoyant ensemble horns. And he executes with flair and fury, writing and arranging the entire collection and emerging with an album that would make his father proud. --Marc Greilsamer Amazon.com:You might say Femi Kuti is carrying on the family business begun by his late father, the great Fela, with whom Femi played ...

:Album Description:The funky fuzzy sounds of West Africa, a hip-shaking, foot-tapping compilation of psychedelic West African rock music. Delving deep into West Africa's funky polyrhythmic take on psychedelia, this album is the third in the critically and commercially acclaimed World Psychedelic Classics series. Features Moussa Doumbia 'Kaleya', Sorry Bomba 'Porry' & Bunzu Sounds 'Zinabu' among others. V2. 2005. :The American psychedelic movement was bound to produce unexpected progeny--including the 1970s, which began as a mainstream attempt to absorb the 'free love,' recreational drug use, and sartorial eccentricities of the previous decade. But there were parallel repercussions elsewhere in the world, and nowhere was ...

:Description:In 2003, the Easy Star All-Stars released 'Dub Side of the Moon' - a complete reggae reinvention of Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side of the Moon' - and it quickly became a cultural phenomenom. Baby Reviews

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
