Howl and Other Poems(more) »rank: 93201by: Allen Ginsberg
: :Has a more notorious, infamous, call to arms of a poem than 'Howl' been published in the late 20th century? Scrawled in 1955 with such intimate, enthusiastic fervor by the young Ginsberg, 'Howl' helped thrust into the public eye the Beats--a genuinely original, deep, and at times unintentionally campy group of writers. But 'Howl' is Ginsberg's work, and while it pays homage to his close friends--like William S. Burroughs ('who retired to Mexico to cultivate a habit') and Jack Kerouac ('or Rocky Mount to tender Buddha')--it's no documentary of bohemian writerdom. Forget for a second that 'Howl' is the famous poem it is--so ... |

Metamorphosis(more) »rank: 602195by: Franz Kafka
: :Gregor Samsa, a seemingly typical man, wakes up one morning to discover he has been transformed into a gigantic insect. Frustrated and depressed about his physical alteration - and his family's rejection - Samsa's plight is filled with underlying meaning. This important literary work, written against the backdrop of increasing turmoil in central Europe, remains not just an extraordinary tale of imagination, but also a disturbing allegory. |

The Boxed Life(more) »rank: 46625by: Henry Rollins
:Album Description:The boxed life sees Henry take to the stage for a collection of spoken word performances, recorded at various dates around the world, from 1989 to 1992. No music! :It's Henry Rollins as standup comedian! Airport gags and all! He's good at it, too, and this two-disc 'talking record' is far more enlightening and entertaining than his angry poetry or his hard-rock histrionics. After all, how many times can he scream about his pain before we all get a little numb? On The Boxed Life (which refers to an endless string of hotel rooms, dressing rooms, and waiting rooms on the road), ... |

Charles Bukowski - Bukowski at Bellevue(more) »rank: 50624starring: Charles Bukowski
:Description:In the Spring of 1970 CHARLES BUKOWSKI, then little known, packed his overnight bag, locked the door of his tumbledown East Hollywood apartment behind him, and took his first plane ride to the state of Washington to read at Bellevue Community College. Th |

It's three movies in one, beginning when punctuality-obsessed Federal Express systems engineer Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) departs on Christmas Eve to escort an ill-fated flight of FedEx packages. Following a mid-Pacific plane crash, movie number two chronicles Chuck's four-year survival on a remote island, totally alone save for a Wilson volleyball (aptly named "Wilson") that becomes Chuck's closest "friend." Movie number three leads up to Chuck's rescue and an awkward encounter with his ex-girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt, in a thankless role), for whom Chuck has seemingly risen from the grave.
It's fascinating to witness Chuck's emerging survival skills, and Hanks's remarkable physical transformation is matched by his finely tuned performance. With slow, rhythmic camera moves and brilliant use of sound, Zemeckis wisely avoids the postcard prettiness of The Black Stallion and The Blue Lagoon to emphasize the harshness of Chuck's ascetic solitude, and this stylistic restraint allows Cast Away to resonate more than one might expect. Even the final scene--which feels like a crowd-pleasing compromise--offers hope without shoving it down our throats. You may not feel the emotional rush that you're meant to feel, but Cast Away remains a respectable effort. --Jeff Shannon
