Multiply(more) »rank: 10798by: Jamie Lidell
:Album Description:There are few more unlikely choices for a soul hero than Jamie Lidell; he's British, Caucasian, and a former electronica experimentalist. Nevertheless, his solo debut, Multiply, finds the young R&B maven alternately channeling Otis Redding, Prince, and Stevie Wonder, while adding a distinctly modern, admittedly Midnite Vultures-era Beck-tinged flair. Whatever its provenance, Multiply is one of the best R&B albums of the mid-2000s. This single of the same name is lifted from the album and features the Edit version backed with the Herbert's Hoedown Bump Mix, Hot Chip's Mouth Mix and Gozales Mix. Warp. 2005. :It would not be an exaggeration to ... |

From Here We Go Sublime(more) »rank: 29518by: The Field
: :Electronic music usually profits from simplicity, a point the Field’s Axel Willner understood well when he made From Here We Go Sublime. Hailing from Sweden, Willner’s record has a weightless allure built out of droning spaces and populated with puffy cloud melodies that float and hover. It’s not exactly minimalist, because the layers are too complex and full of forward motion. But the assured way they repeat and loop into a dance-friendly texture would make both Brian Eno and Underworld proud. FHWGS has no interest in the usual peaks and valleys of trance, and yet its consistent anthemic oomph makes it a distant ... |

Friend(more) »rank: 57507by: Grizzly Bear
: :It's fitting that Grizzly Bear has titled their 10-song EP Friend, as the thing sounds like it was recorded specifically for the band's buddies. We have alternate versions of songs from their previous LP Yellow House, some of their indie-rock friends covering their own songs, and a home demo version of one song. That said, if you are the type to buy a record for just one song, the group's wonderfully produced cover of the controversial, spooky, and brilliant Phil Spector/Carole King 1962 number 'He Hit Me (And it Felt Like a Kiss)' is certainly worth it. The rest is not bad by ... |

Street Horrrsing(more) »rank: 38292by: Fuck Buttons
: :Street Horrrsing, the debut record from the Bristol-based duo Fuck Buttons, is not easy—or even intermediate—listening. It's controlled noise, composed primarily of cranked, droning fuzz, wandering songs and heavily distorted vocals that sound disembodied, like a horde of angry poltergeists. But, as with other purveyors of contained chaos like Mogwai or (at their most adventurous) Deerhunter, Fuck Buttons take great care to bury melodies just close enough to the surface for us to manage a foothold in the swirling clamor. And while this is intensely serious music, the record isn't too haughty for bouts of whimsy; 'Bright Tomorrow' opens with a dance club ... |
