: essential recording:This overview of the heyday of the flagship band of 1970s country-rock illustrates why the genre became such a force in its time--and why it flagged as the decade progressed. Its ascent can be attributed to the vision and charisma of band cofounder Gram Parsons. Parsons's legend has grown to such a point that one must question its validity. Was he that crucial in shaping the genre? The answer is provided through the course of the first disc and a solid portion of the second in this smartly assembled double set. Parsons and partner Chris Hillman brought together influences ...

: :Alabama epitomizes the term people's band. Never a critics' favorite, the quartet from Fort Payne, Alabama, presents slick, sentimental songs that unerringly catch the ear of fans yet mystify those who don't hear the appeal. This two-CD career retrospective, which presents all 41 of the group's No. 1 hits, underlines just how successful they've been. The strengths are there: Randy Owen's clear, deep, intimate vocals; the focus on accessible melodies and musical hooks; and the straightforward song sense that plainly celebrates love, family, and home with all the simplicity of homilies stitched into a framed kitchen doily. Some might argue about ...

: :An immediate hit in Kasey Chambers's native Australia, The Captain is both engaging and off putting, a debut disc that rarely rises above country-rock clichés, but they're agreeable clichés. Chambers has a strong and versatile voice that's occasionally little-girl precious (think Natalie Imbruglia), but is more often beautiful, high, and fragile (imagine Julie Miller, whose husband Buddy contributes harmony here). All of which makes it the perfect instrument for the conflicted title track, where Chambers expresses desire for love and support, then pushes that admirable impulse to such a subservient extreme ('You're the captain, I am no one') that one can't ...

: essential recording:A little bit country, a little bit rock & roll, Steve Earle has bounced between those extremes for years, producing great albums of nearly-straight country and totally-hard rock. On I Feel Alright, though, Earle finally finds a way to blend the styles seamlessly. Whether begging for a forgiveness he probably doesn't deserve on the deceptively sweet 'Valentine's Day,' or steadfastly refusing even the idea of forgiveness on the Stonesy 'Unrepentant,' Earle rocks and twangs in equal measure--and never more thrillingly than on 'You're Still Standing There,' his grateful duet with Lucinda Williams. Earle's best work, at least so far. ...

: essential recording:Gram Parsons was one of the founders of country-rock and an artist whose influence can be heard in the music of such disparate performers as the Eagles, the Rolling Stones, Emmylou Harris, and Wilco. The two-disc, 46-song Sacred Hearts & Fallen Angels brings together tracks from every stage of his too-brief career, starting with his first group, the International Submarine Band, continuing through his period with the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers in the late 1960s, and ending with two solo albums from the early 1970s. Parsons was a talented songwriter, but an erratic singer, and some of ...

The word Baraka means "blessing" in several languages; watching this film, the viewer is blessed with a dazzling barrage of images that transcend language. Filmed in 24 countries and set to an ever-changing global soundtrack, the movie draws some surprising connections between various peoples and the spaces they inhabit, whether that space is a lonely mountaintop or a crowded cigarette factory. Some of these attempts at connection are more successful than others: for instance, an early sequence segues between the daily devotions of Tibetan monks, Orthodox Jews, and whirling dervishes, finding more similarity among these rituals than one might expect. And there are other amazing moments, as when sped-up footage of a busy Hong Kong intersection reveals a beautiful symmetry to urban life that could only be appreciated from the perspective of film. The lack of context is occasionally frustrating--not knowing where a section was filmed, or the meaning of the ritual taking place--and some of the transitions are puzzling. However, the DVD includes a short behind-the-scenes featurette in which cinematographer Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi) explains that the effect was intentional: "It's not where you are that's important, it's what's there." And what's here, in Baraka, is a whole world summed up in 104 minutes. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

The tricky topic of interracial romance gets a sexy, charming, and unexpectedly realistic treatment in Something New. Kenya (Sanaa Lathan, Out of Time, Alien Vs. Predator), a successful accountant, gets set up on a blind date with Brian (Simon Baker, The Ring Two)--only to discover that he's white, leading her to cut the date short. At a party, Kenya admires the garden and gets introduced to the landscape architect: Brian. Thus begins a bumpy but increasingly sparky relationship, despite opposition from Kenya's friends and family, as well as Kenya and Brian's own internal resistance. Make no mistake, Something New is a mainstream romantic comedy, with ridiculously attractive people grappling with problems that get solved with just a little too much ease--but along the way, Kriss Turner's script, Sanaa Hamri's direction, and Baker's and especially Lathan's performances ground the movie in something resembling the real world. Kenya's and Brian's emotional terrain has a genuine texture to it; the rhythm of the dialogue and the visual pacing allows their characters to breathe and become more genuine and vivid than your standard rom-com lovers. The strong supporting cast--including Alfre Woodard (Crooklyn), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Mike Epps (Next Friday), and Blair Underwood (Full Frontal)--doesn't hurt. But Lathan owns the movie; this actress deserves true stardom. --Bret Fetzer
