Child's Celebration of Classical Music(more) »rank: 42474by: Various Artists
: :A Child's Celebration of Classical Music, like its esteemed peers in the Music for Little People series, is not only of superior quality, it caters to the interest of kids without dumbing down the music. Beginning with the lively Boston Pops Orchestra rendition of 'In the Hall of the Mountain King,' this collection draws the listener into worlds created by orchestral majesty, powerful buildups, and exquisite narrative. Meryl Streep's buttery tones preface Ravel's magically ruminative 'Sleeping Beauty' and Carol Channing is simply marvelous in her telling of the giggle-inducing yarn of 'Gerald McBoing Boing,' as set to strings and drums, cymbal clashes, and ... |

The Music of Disney: A Legacy in Song(more) »rank: 107059from: Disney
: :This is the most comprehensive of Disney collections, though the Classic Disney series is more up to date. Spread across three discs, the set features hits and forgotten favorites from movies, TV, and the parks (although more thorough work remains to be done in the last regard). Since the Disney catalog is in a state of constant change, this is the only place to get some songs that aren't currently available; these days it's a rare treat to hear 'Cruella De Vil' from 101 Dalmations, 'Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah,' from Song of the South, and Annette's theme from The Monkey's Uncle. A thick CD booklet is ... |

Martha Stewart Baby: Sleepytime(more) »rank: 45764by: Various Artists
: :Equating Martha Stewart with hip is enough to give any parent pause. Are 'good things' on the order of ribbon-festooned lampshades what cool has come to? Yes and no. Sleepytime may not crash through the cool barrier entirely--its liner notes leap right over the music, choosing, instead to instruct how to frame hand-knit booties--but it comes admirably close. Sending preciousness scampering to the opposite side of the street on this 14-track disc are the artists: Keb' Mo', Lucinda Williams, Billy Bragg, and Alison Krauss represent, in more hushed tones than usual, what makes modern music worth listening to. The Barenaked Ladies loosen the ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
