Zydeco(more) »rank: 3844by: Various Artists
: :From the get-go, Putumayo Presents Zydeco is the down-and-dirtiest most-rockin' Saturday night at a sweaty bayou dance hall or juke joint a non-native can experience. Born of the Creole community in Louisiana's backwaters and moving outward to Texas and California, Zydeco bumps, grinds, and is a wang dang doodle of a big time. Youngblood Keith Frank & the Soileau Zydeco Band rip through 'Co Fa' with their trademark double-kick beat, the low-end-amped-up sound making heartbreak sound like a raunchy roll in the hay. Rosie Ledet's 'You're No Good for Me' is a wailer for all lovers scorned, featuring thudding bass, wiry guitar lines, ... |

Babylon by Bus(more) »rank: 4949by: Bob Marley & The Wailers
: Essential Recording:Bob Marley's second live album, 1978's Babylon by Bus, had to be pretty damned good to match the incandescence of 1975's Live!. But with glorious performances on songs like 'Punky Reggae Party,' 'Jamming,' and 'Is This Love?' Bob Marley and the Wailers came close to equaling Live!. Maybe there wasn't quite the same amount of inspiration, but the Wailers had matured into a tight unit, and Marley was a charismatic performer, as this set captured only too well. And with Marley still at the height of his writing powers, there definitely wasn't a dud song in the bunch. Not so much ... |

Exodus(more) »rank: 10129by: Bob Marley & the Wailers
:Album Description:Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. Universal. 2006. :In 1999, Exodus was rightfully voted by the most important album of the 20th century by Time magazine. This is the visionary Bob Marley's masterpiece, a concept album that distills the myriad experiences of both our daily lives and collective unconsciousness into 46 minutes of aural perfection. Exodus has been flawlessly remastered from the original recordings and showcases what is probably the Wailers' tightest recorded performance. The initial notes of the album's opening track, 'Natural Mystic,' fade up from a deep silence, giving the listener the ... |

Very Best of Toots & the Maytals(more) »rank: 10695by: Toots & the Maytals
: :Toots Hibbert is often compared to Otis Redding, and since Hibbert was greatly influenced by classic American R&B as well as the music of his own Baptist church, that comparison is certainly apt. But while he owes a debt to the intense, high-octane vocal approach of Redding, there is also a great deal of similarity between Toots and the great James Brown. In many ways and at roughly the same time, Hibbert did for Jamaican soul what Brown did for its American cousin--he made it funky and nasty! One listen to the chunky guitar riffs underneath and Hibbert's repetitive vocal chants on top ... |
