Asian Groove(more) »rank: 45355by: Various Artists
: :About a generation ago, South Asian immigrants living in the bleak, industrial British city of Birmingham invented an ethnic-based brand of party music. Today's young ravers have upped the ante, drawing on percussive Punjabi bhangra and qawwali, an ecstasy-inducing Pakistani devotional style made famous by the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. These are then festooned with defiantly artificial canned snares and ambient electronics, plus absurdist quotes from Bollywood musicals, saccharine Euro-pop, and over-the-top lounge clichés. The resulting polyglot pastiches tend to be fashioned in broad strokes and are thus not ideal for quiet living room listening. However, they are BPM nirvana when experienced ... |

Libre(more) »rank: 51417by: Marc Anthony
: :There's a palpable sense of joy in Marc Anthony's voice. The salsa star and pop sensation may be slight in stature, but when he opens his mouth to sing, the sheer power and passion of his tenor grabs a hold of your heart and makes you sit up and pay attention. The king of contemporary salsa was born and raised in New York City, but as good as Anthony is in his native tongue, he is triumphant when he sings in Spanish. Like Youssou N'Dour, Celia Cruz, and other great voices, Anthony's intensity and purpose transcend language barriers: even if you don't understand ... |

Steel Pulse: Ultimate Collection(more) »rank: 22893by: Steel Pulse
: :During the mid-'70s, Steel Pulse were among the most important culture lions to emerge from England's highly politicized and supremely educated Caribbean community. Contemporaries of Aswad, Black Uhuru and dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, Steel Pulse produced a dub-heavy reggae that referenced African diaspora history and fed off of the burgeoning British punk rock movement. The resulting music was thematically dense yet readily accessible to a widening mainstream audience. Unfortunately, the ambitiously titled Ultimate Collection doesn't quite live up to its name. The disc gathers 20 years' worth of Steel Pulse's vision, representing some of the group's biggest hits, but some of its ... |

: :Bachata Roja is the first ever international release of classic Dominican Bachata. From the early 1960's to the late 1980's the legendary voices of Eladio Romero Santos, Leonardo Paniagua and Blas Duran spoke to the hearts of a generation. The dizzying guitar accompaniment of pioneers like Edilio Paredes and Augusto Santos charted the course of bachata s rise, and for three decades theirs was the sound of the streets of Santo Domingo. iASO has selected here some of the defining songs of bachata s pre-electric era. |

The Indestructible Beat of Soweto, Vol. 1(more) »rank: 90357by: Various Artists
: :This is possibly one of the most important collections of South African music to be released off the continent. Before Paul Simon, Sting, and Peter Gabriel started their explorations and exploitations of African music, this stunning set of music was already out there showing the world how it was done in South Africa's townships. Now well-known names like Ladysmith Black Mambazo (before they did candy commercials) and the growling Mahlathini were given their first international hearing. But the real gems are the sounds we never got to hear on Graceland: the raw mandolin and fiddle of Moses Mchunu, the wonderful jive vocals of ... |

Continuing a fortuitous tradition of capturing the Sondheim legacy on video recordings, this performance was filmed before a live audience in Los Angeles during the 1982 national tour. Almost 20 years later, Hearn returned to the role opposite Patti LuPone in an acclaimed concert production. But Sweeney Todd is an especially compelling experience in this 1982 version, complete with the clever staging tricks (e.g., the barber's chair) and as close to the original cast as we're likely to see. --David Horiuchi
