: :You expect holly and ivy at Christmas, but how about a two-olive concoction loaded with classic swing? Eighteen cuts deep, there are pieces here for every generation that ever dug the style, from the '40s to the music's rebirth in the '90s. Truly timeless performances by Louie Armstrong (who rightfully should be Father Christmas), Louis Prima, Les Brown, and Lionel Hampton and his Orchestra, are matched by the country & western swing of Tex Beneke and filled with likeable middle-of-the-road pop fluff by Jack Jones, Jo Stafford, and Manhattan Transfer. The always-innovative Mexican pop composer-genius Esquivel delivers his eccentric trademark version of 'White ...

: :Velez has created dozens of recordings featuring his percussion, working in a variety of styles and ensembles. On this album, listeners have the rare chance to hear a meditative, simple solo effort. He plays bendir (a frame drum from North Africa) or bodhran, adding caxixi (a Brazilian rattle) or maracas. He overlays this with wispy voices that come and go. Touted as 'healing' musical work that stimulates the energy centers of the body and mind it is also excellent listening music, played with subtle passion or firebrand virtuosity, building layer upon layer of complex rhythm using the most basic of tools. Velez makes ...

: :Jazz à Saint Germain is a compilation of compelling jazz standards performed in tribute to the Parisian speakeasies that flourished during the German occupation in World War II. Espousing a free-spirited highlife as well as an existential and intellectual aesthetic, the French underground heartily embraced American jazz. Showcasing traditional styles as well as ambitious adaptations that reveal reggae, African, and even hip-hop influences, this collection is tasteful and eclectic. Angélique Kidjo's version of 'Summertime' is gently evocative, as is Dee Dee Bridgewater's moving rendition of 'Watermelon Man.' The Jazz Passengers and Debbie Harry interpret 'There Is No More Tomorrow,' and French chanteuse François ...

On her eighth studio album, Damita Jo--the title lifted from her middle name--Janet Jackson teams up with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis once again on what is perhaps the most feverish album in her two decade long career. Whether she's taking the listener on a torrid excursion in the four song island suite, or boasting of her sexual prowess on "Sexhibition's" word games lyrics, where she tells fans "relax, it's just sex," the singer tries hard--maybe too hard--to establish herself as a sexual avatar with portfolio. But in "Strawberry Bounce," she seems more like a pole dancer in stilettos than a social revolutionary, as she catalogs the way she plans to make her inamorato lose control, and she just sounds silly on "Moist," which extols the female orgasm. Instead, the best moments on the album are when Jackson comes off as saucy and winsome instead of a heavy breather, like on the down-tempo "Thinkin' Bout My Ex," her collaboration with Babyface, which seems lifted right out of her autobiography, and on the athletic Prince clone "Just A Little While." The title track is Jackson's own version of J-Lo's "Jenny On the Block," and she sounds just as insincere as Lopez when she tried to convince us that she was just an ordinary neighborhood diva. Instead, Janet’s much more persuasive when she joins up with hip-hop savant Kanye West on "My Baby," pairing her breathy, little girl vocals to his sharp, focused rap. Then and only then does Damita Jo sound like love can actually trump sex. --Jaan Uhelszki
