Eccentric Soul, Vol. 1: The Capsoul Label(more) »rank: 46241by: Various Artists
:Album Description:Short for 'Capital City Soul,' the Columbus Ohio Capsoul label's history spans only five short years throughout the 1970's. Founded by Bill Moss, a local singer and DJ at WVKO in Columbus, Capsoul released just a dozen 45's and one highly sought after LP resulting in a few regional hits. Numero 001 is a compilation of nineteen tracks spanning the label's all but forgotten history. :How does a record become a hit? As history has shown, for every chart-topper, there are easily 10 equally well-made and compelling songs which never become widely-known. Dr. Dolittle (1998 Film)(more) »rank: 85802by: Various Artists
: :Eddie Murphy stars in the remake of this classic flick, but his presence is curiously absent on this soundtrack comp (not even a sound bite from the funnyman). Instead Dr. Dolittle is a solid collection of R&B and hip-hop heavyweights, including Ray J., Montell Jordan, Aaliyah, and All Saints. While there's nothing too groundbreaking here, the album does have its strong points. As the disc progresses, the ballads are left behind and the songs shift into high gear. Timbaland's up-tempo 'Da Funk' and Eddie Kane & DeVille's 'Push 'Em Up' are party-ready, and Dawn Robinson does a funky rendition of Aretha Franklin's 'Rocksteady.' ... |

The Tom Joyner Morning Show Old School Mix(more) »rank: 94887by: Various Artists
: :With the 'Jammin' Oldies' format spreading across America, not to mention the current proliferation of dance-floor-ready DJ discs, the time is right for superstar morning-radio jock Tom Joyner to weigh in. The music on Joyner's Old School Mix is actually cut up by veteran remixer Steve 'Silk' Hurley, whose tempo shifts are occasionally sloppy, but who more often executes baaad segues such as the one from Slave's 'Slide' into Heatwave's 'Groove Line.' Whether you're a fan of the no-rap approach or a hip-hop kid in need of deep-dish '70s and early-'80s stompers, this is a good party to crash. --Rickey Wright |
