: :The Bulworth soundtrack album does for hip-hop what other movie-related discs do for their respective genres, showcasing a wide variety of styles under the banner of rap--a music that plays a key role in the Warren Beatty vehicle's plot. Where there's politics (another major theme), there's Public Enemy, which delivers 'Kill Em Live,' their second cinematic contribution of the month, following their work on Spike Lee's He Got Game. Bulworth also offers some intriguing matches, as Dr. Dre teams with LL Cool J for 'Zoom' and Fugee Pras Michel hooks up with Grammy favorite Ol' Dirty Bastard and R&B newcomer Mya on 'Ghetto ...

: :Compilations assembled to showcase record label rosters have become increasingly the norm. On Violator: The Album, the featured artists--including LL Cool J, Noreaga, the Beatnuts, and Busta Rhymes, are on different labels but have one thing in common--Chris Lighty's Violator Management company. 'Vivrant Thing,' Q-Tip's bouncy ode to women and the Flipmode Squad's playful 'Whatcha Come Around Here For' foreshadow the album's up-tempo romp. Unfortunately, the majority of the remaining tracks are not the established artists' best work, but the compilation aptly exposes several up-and-comers. Nevertheless, names such as Mobb Deep, Fat Joe, and Big Pun--all of whom appear here--make Violator a management ...

: :The Def Jam box tells a story of a sound, a movement, and a lifestyle. Filled with a veritable who's who of hip-hop (3rd Bass, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Slick Rick, EPMD, Beastie Boys) and some sizzling R&B cuts, this four-CD set is both a greatest-hits package (of the Def Jam/Columbia era) and a shout out to the label that understood the culture--and, more important, knew how to make others get it, too. Perhaps the greatest praise one can give Def Jam is that the label still matters, years after this set was released (see late-1990s efforts by Method Man and Jay-Z, ...

San Francisco filmmaker Ernie Fosselius made the most successful short film of all time in the 1978 Hardware Wars, an inspired, mock-trailer for a nonexistent, cheapo rip-off of Star Wars. It worked like this: instead of Chewbacca, Fosselius offers the Cookie Monster. Instead of Darth Vader's breathy, slightly echoed voice emerging somehow behind that black-mask helmet, we get a villain whose every ranting utterance is so muffled even this film's Princess Leia equivalent beseeches him, "What? I don't understand you." And so on. Part of the joke is that George Lucas's revolutionary special effects are supplanted by common kitchen gizmos--mixers, toasters--that serve as spaceships and weapons sources. The updated special edition contains 20 computer-generated "special defects" that don't--the distributor boasts--at all match Fosselius's earlier version. Um... right on? --Tom Keogh

It's Christmas in the tech noir slum of the post-apocalyptic future, and scrap-metal sculptor Stacey Travis gets a present she'll never forget. Scavenger boyfriend Dylan McDermott returns from the wastelands with the insectoid robot head of a killing machine. In no time it whirs to life and builds itself a gizmo-laden body out of handy appliances to continue its single-minded destruction of the human race, one warm body at a time. Director Richard Stanley, something of a scavenger himself, plunders everything from The Terminator, Blade Runner, and The Road Warriorto Short Circuit (the spidery construct resembles a demonic Number 5) for his violent flesh-vs.-metal survival thriller. Shot in sun-blasted orange and sweltering red, it's a triumph of style, set design, and grunge aesthetics over story, driven by a pounding techno score by Simon Boswell and punctuated by splattering gore. --Sean Axmaker
