Children of Nuggets: Original ARtyfacts from the Second Psychedelic Era - 1976-1996(more) »rank: 5663by: Various Artists
: :It would take thousands of dollars (or as many hours in download time) to hoard the most coveted songs from the eighties' top secret power pop bands, garage combos and post-new wave throngs into one collection. Or you can let Rhino Records, which masterfully conspired with writer/musician Lenny Kaye late last century to inflate and repackage Kaye's original Nuggets compilation, do the legwork. These four discs, though chaotically sequenced, scour all sides of the ponds to capture the vitality and innovation of mostly 1980-'85, introducing (or reintroducing) to-be-influential bands like San Francisco's Flamin' Groovies, New York's Raybeats, England's Soft Boys, Australia's the Church ... |

We're A Happy Family - A Tribute To The Ramones(more) »rank: 103007by: Various Artists
: :It was inevitable that a glut of Ramones tribute albums would follow the passing of Joey and Dee Dee Ramone. The 17-song-strong We're a Happy Family thankfully escapes the dubious tribute-album ghetto. It's no surprise that Ramones descendents like Green Day, Rancid, and the Offspring stick close to the tired and true, while headbanger James Hetfield makes '53rd & 3rd' sound like a Metallica song. But the standouts on the disc are the efforts where artists go off the rails. Pete Yorn turns in a yearning version of 'I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend,' while Tom Waits goes the ghoulish route on 'The Return ... |

Stoned Immaculate: The Music of the Doors(more) »rank: 19164by: Various Artists
: :More fun than any tribute album has a right to be, Stoned Immaculate is clearly a labor of love that manages to embrace the spirit of the Doors without regressing into parading a line of Jim Morrison impersonators through the studio. Much credit goes to producer Ralph Sall, who--in addition to setting up collaborations between the surviving Doors and an array of artists from John Lee Hooker to Days of the New--also breaks out the beats and samples to create a few 'new' Doors tracks. While Sall is no Fatboy Slim (despite the winking nod to 'Bird of Prey' during the fadeout of ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
