Walk the Line (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)(more) »rank: 11538by: Various Artists
:Album Description:This Import pressing includes the bonus track 'Jackson' (Video Version-Joaquin Phoenix). In the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic, Walk The Line, the film's creators took the risk of having the stars perform their own vocals, and it's a gamble that paid off surprisingly well. Joaquin Phoenix's take on the country icon is impressive; though he lacks the deft delivery of Cash on the opening 'Get Rhythm', the actor does capture the spirit of the Man in Black without resorting to mimicry, particularly on 'Cry Cry Cry', which faithfully replicates his vintage Sun Records sound. While those who enjoyed Walk The Line should seek ... |

Halloween Hootenanny(more) »rank: 29679by: Various Artists
: :You just need one look at Rob Zombie to know that the guy knows a thing or two about Halloween. He really proves his mettle--and his metal, for that matter--on this loud, garish, downright fun collection of rip-roaring devil's music. There's actually very little to be afraid of, to tell the truth--unless, that is, you have a phobia about the kind of goofy good times laid down by Zombie and pals like Rocket from the Crypt, Satan's Pilgrims, and the wrestling-masked power-surf combo Los Straitjackets (who turn in a hypercharged 'Munsters Theme'). The garishly groovy package, which features some of Zombie's most over-the-top ... |

Marie opens the show with an outdoor rendition of "We Need a Little Christmas" and then moves into the studio where Kirk Cameron arrives on a snowmobile (fresh from rescuing a trio of blonde snow bunnies) to read "The First Christmas Story." Lee Greenwood performs "Christmas to Christmas" and later a duet with Marie. "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas" is sung by Sally Struthers and daughter with help from the Osmond Boys--six stepping stones ages 4 to 12 who have the senior Osmonds' moves down pat. The adorable award, though, goes to Marie's 5-year-old son, Steven, who performs a rockin' version of "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" (clapping on the off-beat nearly the whole song).
Marie has a good, strong voice, but many of the songs are overproduced and melodramatic. This, most likely, is a product of the big, pouffy '80s (her hair and outfits are also bigger-than-life) rather than a reflection of her talents. The closing number, "O Holy Night," sung by Marie alone, is quite lovely. --Dana Van Nest
