Reservoir Dogs: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack(more) »rank: 9001by: Various Artists
: :While not as much of a commercial success as Quentin Tarantino's later film Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs is today regarded as a classic, although happily one that doesn't take itself too seriously. With its out-of-sequence narrative involving a diamond heist, its desperate characters expressing opinions on music and cinema, and the constant radio play (all the film's music is from source cues), Dogs remains shocking and exhilarating. Even stronger on the CD is the implication that the story is somehow being told by Steven Wright's deadpan '70s disc jockey. Tracks include 'Little Green Bag' by the George Baker Selection, 'Hooked on a Feeling' ... |

Reggae Christmas from Studio One(more) »rank: 9239by: Various Artists
: :The Studio One family, led by Clement Coxone Dodd, is known for putting out crucial rhythm tracks that have stood the test of time. Reggae Christmas from Studio One is a good collection of vintage tunes that lyrically sing to seasonal themes. The Johnny Osborne and Freddy McGregor tracks are outstanding, as is the Heptone's tune. The Wailers' song is in a solid old vocal-harmony style. Some lesser-known singers carry the bulk of this recording to varying degrees of success. All of the music here features that dub-wise production Coxone is so famous for. Check this one out for an Iree rub-a-dub Christmas ... |

Hand-Picked: 25 Years Of Bluegrass On Rounder Records(more) »rank: 4794by: Various Artists
: :Rounder compiled this superb 50-song set to serve as an introduction to bluegrass in general and to their own catalog in particular. Obvious marketing motives aside, the collection has few weaknesses and offers a broad look at the ever-morphing genre. Perhaps more than any other label, Rounder gave exposure to the renegade progressive and 'newgrass' musicians who worshipped the style despite the fact that they weren't from the mountains. Folks like David Grisman, Bill Keith, Tony Trischka, and Bela Fleck push the music in new directions while others such as Del McCoury, Don Stover, James King, Jim & Jesse, and Vern Williams represent ... |

ESPN Presents: Jock Jams, Volume 1(more) »rank: 8539by: Various Artists
: :A collection of well-known pop tunes, this record documents those ubiquitous tracks that have been played into the ground at nearly every sports facility in the country. Most, like 'Whoomp! There It Is' and 'Hip Hop Hooray,' are undeniably catchy, and other tracks were downright splendid when they first appeared on the scene. Some even credit 'Pump Up the Volume' with being a breakthrough for the electronic music scene of the late '80s and early '90s. Still, bringing musical innovation to light is not what the makers of this recording had in mind. It's all about the trashy glitz, fleeting glories, and mindless ... |
