by: Pearl Jam

:Album Description:From the time of their spectacular arrival 17 years ago, Pearl Jam has continually earned and maitained the respect of one of popular music's most devoted followings. Live at the Gorge represents why. Weighing in at 7 1/2 hours of unparalleled, nonstop, incendiary rock 'n' roll, this box set faithfully presents an all-time legend at the height of their power. :Perhaps it's the color scheme and imagery on the slipcase art for Live at the Gorge, recalling Roger Dean's classic 1970s-era album jackets, but this 7-disc set of live Pearl Jam feels warmly retro. Fans will concur, of course, since the 100 ...

by: Soundgarden

: :Soundgarden combined the epic grandstanding of Led Zeppelin with the grunge buzz of Blue Cheer and the psychedelic undertones of the Butthole Surfers to create some of the definitive hard rock of the 1990s. This collection of what can loosely be defined as 'hits' (hard rock isn't noted for its singles action) briefly sweeps over the indie years with SubPop and SST, placing emphasis on the band's successful A&M years. Singer Chris Cornell's histrionic wails grabbed the bulk of the attention, but the band's true power rested with the drumming of Matt Cameron and the twin guitar attack of Cornell and Kim Thayil. ...

: :Though it contains none of the band's radio staples, No Code may be the one Pearl Jam record that holds up start to finish. Partly this is because of the songs, which like the hypnotic 'Who Are You' are unusually straightforward. But it's also because this is the most musically varied effort of the band's career: 'Hail, Hail' is a full-tilt firestorm, but the quiet 'Sometimes' is a hesitating, slow burn. And while 'Smile' has a Crazy Horse roar, the unplugged setting of 'Off He Goes' lets the song breathe and the emotions sink in. --David Cantwell

:Album Description:Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2007.. :Assuming former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl dreads the thought of forever being known as 'the guy from Kurt Cobain's band,' the last thing he'd want to hear is that the debut album from his new band Foo Fighters sounds much like one from the deceased duke of grunge. Unfortunately, Nirvana comparisons are not only inevitable, they're bound to consume the dialog surrounding his quartet entirely. Perhaps it was unavoidable osmosis: Grohl, Foo Fighters' lead singer-guitarist, wrote most of these tunes during breaks from beat-keeping for his former ...

: :The Smashing Pumpkins are a big rock band, molded by leader Billy Corgan after stadium and progressive rock giants from the Seventies. As such it's only fitting that after only two albums they would release a collection of B-sides. The result, Pisces Iscariot, is not only a good compendium to their other work, but it's a very good record in its own right. Most of the 14 tracks follow the Pumpkins' blueprint, traveling sonically from soft to loud and back again. Among the slew of originals previously available on singles and imports is a hauntingly beautiful cover of Fleetwood Mac's 'Landslide.' Surprisingly there's ...

: essential recording:Grunge was the Stone Temple Pilots' stock-in-trade on their first two albums, but Tiny Music takes the group beyond such stylistic limitations. There's still plenty of grinding, metallic alt-rock here, thanks to 'Pop's Love Suicide,' 'Big Bang Baby,' and 'Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart.' 'Lady Picture Show' is a bracing blast of Beatlesesque pop, however, while 'And So I Know' finds Weiland crooning over, of all things, cocktail jazz. The album's dozen tracks find the troubled singer musing (rather creepily) about the price of fame on 'Adhesive' ('Sell more records if I'm dead... Hope it's sooner / Hope ...

One of the most unjustly underrated Italian operas receives a production that should help correct that attitude. Andrea Chenier is based on the true story of a poet who was caught up and destroyed by the blind fury of the French Revolution. Giordano's music captures the acrid flavor of that movement, the cynicism of some of its leaders, and Chenier's integrity and tragic fate. This production's value has probably increased since Plácido Domingo, the leading Chenier of his generation, has dropped the role from his repertoire.

All three principals sing eloquently and with a fine sense of the opera's structure and context. Anna Tomowa-Sintow is in even better voice than Domingo, and Giorgio Zancanaro heads an expert supporting cast. The Covent Garden Chorus, directed with distinction by Michael Hampe, gives a memorable impression of the revolutionary mob. Julius Rudel's conducting is totally idiomatic. --Joe McLellan

It would have been better, of course, if this 1984 production of Donizetti's Anna Bolena, or at least its title role, had been filmed 20 years earlier, when Joan Sutherland's voice was in its spectacular prime. But like her Canadian Opera Norma, dating from 1981, this is a better-late-than-never documentation of one of the most remarkable voices of the 20th century.

Lotfi Mansouri spared no effort or expense in making this production special. He personally directed the staging, and handpicked an outstanding cast (right down to the very young and then-unknown Ben Heppner in the small role of Hervey). The visual elements--sets, costumes, and camera work--are also handled with great care, and Sutherland's positive response to this dedication can be sensed in her performance as the unfortunate wife of King Henry VIII. James Morris is best-known as a Wagnerian singer--perhaps the leading Wotan of our time--but he is equally at home in many of the villainous roles that are the fate of bass- baritones (Iago, Scarpia, Don Giovanni). In this sinister tale of an innocent woman ruthlessly destroyed, he shows a surprising knack for the bel canto style. Judith Forst is also excellent in the role of Jane Seymour. --Joe McLellan
