Gish(more) »rank: 120849by: Smashing Pumpkins
: essential recording:Upon the release of Gish--the group's debut--in the summer of 1991, more than one rock aficionado hailed the Smashing Pumpkins as the best band to come out of Chicago since Ministry. A bold statement, yes, but one backed up by Billy Corgan's Hendrix-like riffs and searing signature guitar tone. Intriguing songwriting is evidenced from the start as well, with the driving, amped-up rock of 'I Am One,' 'Siva,' and 'Tristessa' contrasted with the soothingly eerie psychedelic flavor of 'Rhinoceros' and 'Window Paine.' Gish predates the band's movement toward the loop-based electronic sounds heard in their late-'90s works, yet the seeds for ... |

Slap-Happy(more) »rank: 100865by: L7
: :L7 are arguably the most important female hard-rock group ever, and with Slap-Happy, the band's seventh disc in 11 years, Donita Sparks, Suzi Gardner, and Dee Plakas show exactly why this is the case. Pounding out huge riffs with evil intensity and shrewd humor, the women of L7 practice the art of rock with a subtle intelligence that keeps their music from slipping into self-parody. On loud, boisterous songs like 'Mantra Down' and 'War With You,' L7's notorious punk-metal roots are exposed to full, breakneck effect. With Sparks and Gardner trading vocals and meat-cleaver guitar breaks while Plakas beats the holy hell out ... |

Binaural(more) »rank: 112920by: Pearl Jam
: :Pearl Jam lowered its profile after becoming a worldwide musical phenomenon in the early '90s, pulling back from the touring, radio, and press fronts. And this diverse 13-song outing, lacking another 'Alive' or 'Better Man,' isn't the album to thrust Pearl Jam back into the limelight. Binaural kicks out the jams with a grandiosity worthy of the Who, as Pearl Jam roars through the loose, raucous two-minute-plus opener 'Breakerfall' and into another brief rave-up, 'God's Dice.' Quickly, though, the loud MC5-style guitar outpourings that begin PJ's seventh album (and first to feature former Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron) morph into the edgy, taut 'Evacuation' ... |

World of Noise(more) »rank: 119449by: Everclear
: :A triumph of Northwestern indie-rock, Everclear's debut album was made for a mere $400 and released on Tim/Kerr Records before Capitol snapped the group up in wake of flannelmania. (Sonically, it's better than Nirvana's Bleach which cost a relatively extravagant $200 more.) And while musical simplicity is part of the band's genius--guitars grind and spew distortion while the rhythm section hammers the beat into submission--there's nothing simplistic about bandleader Art Alexakis's lyrics. 'You wonder why I live like this, man, you just won't understand / I won't give in, I'm not like that,' he sings in 'Loser Makes Good,' a song about convictions ... |

The prize must have come, at least in part, because alongside the poverty and dispossession, Steinbeck chronicled the Joads' refusal, even inability, to let go of their faltering but unmistakable hold on human dignity. Witnessing their degeneration from Oklahoma farmers to a diminished band of migrant workers is nothing short of crushing. The Joads lose family members to death and cowardice as they go, and are challenged by everything from weather to the authorities to the California locals themselves. As Tom Joad puts it: "They're a-workin' away at our spirits. They're a tryin' to make us cringe an' crawl like a whipped bitch. They tryin' to break us. Why, Jesus Christ, Ma, they comes a time when the on'y way a fella can keep his decency is by takin' a sock at a cop. They're workin' on our decency."
The point, though, is that decency remains intact, if somewhat battle-scarred, and this, as much as the depression and the plight of the "Okies," is a part of American history. When the California of their dreams proves to be less than edenic, Ma tells Tom: "You got to have patience. Why, Tom--us people will go on livin' when all them people is gone. Why, Tom, we're the people that live. They ain't gonna wipe us out. Why, we're the people--we go on." It's almost as if she's talking about the very novel she inhabits, for Steinbeck's characters, more than most literary creations, do go on. They continue, now as much as ever, to illuminate and humanize an era for generations of readers who, thankfully, have no experiential point of reference for understanding the depression. The book's final, haunting image of Rose of Sharon--Rosasharn, as they call her--the eldest Joad daughter, forcing the milk intended for her stillborn baby onto a starving stranger, is a lesson on the grandest scale. "'You got to,'" she says, simply. And so do we all. --Melanie Rehak
