:Album Description:2008 vinyl LP repressing of this classic Alternative Rock album pressed on 180gm wax. Universal. 2008. essential recording:The last Nirvana collection recorded before the untimely death of Kurt Cobain, Unplugged caught many by surprise with its stripped down, neo-acoustic offerings with a bridled fury. When Cobain sings, 'I swear I don't have a gun, I don't have a gun' with clenched teeth (instead of an open howl) and when the haunting strains of 'About a Girl'--from their earliest LP--chills even with quieted guitars, you discover a new appreciation for the nuances of one of the greatest bands of recent times. Highlights ...

:Album Description:The Presidents Of The United States Of America’s 1995 debut went double platinum in the U.S., rocketed all the way to #6 on Billboard’s Top 200, produced three Top 40 hits & a #1 single on Billboard’s Modern Rock Chart, and garnered two Grammy nominations and a gaggle of critical praise. You either loved this record or…you loved it. The band is back and, believe it or not, they once again own this album. They’ve chosen NAIL to distribute it, which is in line with their renewed esprit de corps and desire to keep things friendly and local this time around. The ...

: :Stag is adulterated Melvins, which is a good thing. Yes, Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and their bass player of the moment (Mark Deutrom) still pound away to wake the devil. But the trademark metal chuggers frequently give way to surprisingly musical moments. Sitar, trombone, slide guitar, keyboards, and scratches soften the edges of the music. 'Lacrimosa' is ambient chopped apart by power chords. Despite its Satanic subject matter, 'Black Bock,' sounds less like Black Sabbath than the Archies Stag is most appealing when the Melvins betray their roots, and that's about half the time. --Steven Stolder

: essential recording:An introductory drum roll drops out and is replaced by a single suspended electric guitar, which is then paralleled by a snare, filled in with the bass, and--crash!--'Cherub Rock,' the opening track, is enveloped in an explosion of metal guitar. So the journey begins. This album is pre-experimentation vintage Pumpkins. Produced by Butch Vig (Garbage, Sonic Youth, Nirvana's Nevermind), Siamese Dream is first about guitars. Lots and lots of guitars. A very close second is Jimmy Chamberlain's unquestionably excellent power drumming. Throughout each song, Billy Corgan delivers angsty lyrics in his signature breathy whine. 'Disarm' is a nice intermission halfway though ...

: :Had there not been Helmet, then a whole genre of metal wouldn't have been born. Bands such as Godsmack, Pantera, Linkin Park, System of a Down, and a generation of nu-metalists owe their very careers to Page Hamilton's noisy, snarling guitars, John Stanier's scatter gun drumming, and Henry Bogdan's nasty, assertive bass. One of the earliest bands to combine a jazz sensibility with hardcore, this New York-based band's dedication to pairing their textured bone crushing riffs with elegant off-kilter time signatures, and well-crafted and surprisingly sensitive lyrics, like the dark ambient philosophy of 'Unsung' or the ghostly imagery of 'Wilma's Rainbow,' has earned ...

: :Soundgarden combined the epic grandstanding of Led Zeppelin with the grunge buzz of Blue Cheer and the psychedelic undertones of the Butthole Surfers to create some of the definitive hard rock of the 1990s. This collection of what can loosely be defined as 'hits' (hard rock isn't noted for its singles action) briefly sweeps over the indie years with SubPop and SST, placing emphasis on the band's successful A&M years. Singer Chris Cornell's histrionic wails grabbed the bulk of the attention, but the band's true power rested with the drumming of Matt Cameron and the twin guitar attack of Cornell and Kim Thayil. ...

:Album Description:Veruca Salt skyrocketed to fame in 1994 with the alternative radio mega-hit 'Seether' off their Minty Fresh debut album 'American Thighs,' and followed with an equally successful sophomore effort, 1997's '8 Arms to Hold You.' After co-founder Nina Gordon left to pursue a solo career, lead singer/guitarist Louise Post reformed the band with guitarist Stephen Fitzpatrick and drummer Kellii Scott, to produce 2000's critically acclaimed 'Resolver,' described by Chicago Sun Times' Jim DeRogatis as 'the best album to be released under the band's Willy Wonka-inspired moniker, as well as one of the strongest albums of the year ... a galvanizing rock 'n' ...

: :Thank heavens the Trees' remarkably cohesive and mature 1986 debut has finally been released on CD. The songs aren’t really 'there' yet, but they would be with time. Few bands mixed psychedelic, hard rock and punk sounds in the mid '80s quite the way the Screaming Trees did. They had contemporaries; the Flaming Lips had a similar mix of manic energy with acid-tinged vocals at the time, while Plan 9 were making a similarly keyboard-heavy psych-punk, and Australian act the Died Pretty also shared vocalist Mark Lanegan’s then very un-hip fascination with Jim Morrison. Clearly, this is music arrived at in a vacuum, ...

You can say this about D.E.B.S.: director Angela Robinson’s 2005 feature isn’t very good, but it is surprisingly entertaining. The premise, which bears a passing resemblance to any number of previous films (from Heathers and Clueless to Charlie’s Angels and the Austin Powers franchise), involves a secret government agency recruiting young women as spies, based on their smarts, their ability to lie convincingly, and the fact that they look fetching in ultra-miniskirts. Four of the D.E.B.S. are then charged with collaring "criminal mastermind" Lucy Diamond (Jordana Brewster), who has returned to the States after hatching all manner of nefarious plots overseas. Then comes the twist: Diamond is gay, and one of our heroines, Amy Bradshaw (Sara Foster), unexpectedly finds herself falling in love with her. Out goes the espionage element; in comes the love story, and therein lies the surprise, as this burgeoning lesbian relationship is handled with unexpected sympathy, even tenderness. Sure, the acting, even by veteran grownups like Holland Taylor and Michael Clarke Duncan, is almost uniformly lame, and the script is silly; overall, the film would have to put on considerable weight to even be considered frothy. Still, D.E.B.S. isn’t a bad way to kill a couple of hours. DVD bonus features include a making-of featurette and commentary by Robinson and the cast. --Sam Graham

The teaming of Johnny Knoxville (Jackass: The Movie) and Seann William Scott (Dude, Where's My Car?) as well as the presence of the '70s-flavored car chases that were a specialty of the TV series guarantees that The Dukes of Hazzard will be even more lowbrow than the CBS TV series (1979-85) that inspired it. However, this brain-damaging comedy is more "rehash" than "remake," as good ol' Georgiaboys Luke Duke (Knoxville) and his cousin Bo (Scott) are frequently upstaged bythe General Lee, the Confederate-flagged '69 Charger that they drive, jump, race, and fly in as they smuggle moonshine for their Uncle Jesse (Willie Nelson). Meanwhile, cousin Daisy Duke (Jessica Simpson) is reliably available to model her short-shorts (aka "Daisy Dukes") and awesome figure (and let's face it, Simpson's talents pretty much begin and end right there), while corrupt honcho Boss Hogg (Burt Reynolds, who should know better) recruits a local NASCAR star to advance his wily scheme of converting Hazzard County into a strip mine. Director Jay Chandrasekhar (Super Troopers) manages to mine some good-natured humor from the movie's oval-track detour and a few colorful supporting players (notably Kevin Hefferman as the Duke's pal Sheev). Otherwise, consider yourself warned: The Dukes of Hazzard is shameless Hollywood product at its most forgettable, trafficking in shameless white, rural Southern stereotypes. If you can make itto the end, there's a blooper reel to reward your endurance. --Jeff Shannon

DVD features
Yes, the unrated edition of The Dukes of Hazzard has nudity... but no, it's not of Jessica Simpson, but topless sorority girls. There are also two sets--"PG-13" and "unrated"--of deleted scenes and bloopers. The four minutes of unrated deleted scenes (supplementing the 25 minutes of "PG-13" deleted scenes) include more sorority girls and a menage à trois for Johnny Knoxville . The five minutes of unrated bloopers (the same amount as the "PG-13" bloopers) feature a few more girls but mostly bad language. Featurettes discuss the Daisy Duke short shorts (and show how you can make your own), car stunts, and the making of the movie (narrated by a cast member of the original TV series). --David Horiuchi
