300 Years of Guitar Masterpieces(more) »rank: 4868from: Vox (Classical)
: :Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie ... |

Ludwig van Beethoven: 9 Symphonien(more) »rank: 6141by: Gundula Janowitz, Waldemar Kmentt, Hilde Rossel-Majdan
: essential recording:By general consensus, Herbert von Karajan's first (1963) Beethoven cycle for Deutsche Grammophon is the best of the four (!) that he recorded. The Berlin Philharmonic was in top form, and they had not yet made an artistic fetish out of the bland smoothness that typified the conductor's later recordings of this music (and just about everything else). Karajan's squeaky clean, emotionally cool Beethoven will always be something of an acquired taste, but this set makes the best possible case for it. --David Hurwitz |

Andrew Lawrence-King, playing Irish harp, Baroque harp, and psaltery with his accustomed finesse, is a major reason for the disc's success, accompanying most of the vocals and contributing three lovely solos. Tchaikovsky: Concerto No. 1/Rachmaninoff: Concerto No. 2(more) »rank: 3698from: RCA
: essential recording:What a story there is behind this recording! When Van Cliburn won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow at the height of the Cold War with his playing of this concerto, it created an international sensation. The recording followed immediately thereafter, and Cliburn was launched on an international career of unprecedented celebrity for a classical musician. Perhaps the attention was too much, too soon, given his subsequent burn-out and retirement from public life. Fortunately, we have these unique recordings to document what was, by all accounts, a genuine phenomenon. This is the disc 'heard 'round the world.' --David Hurwitz |

Reflections of Spain: Spanish Favorites for Guitar(more) »rank: 5819by: David Russell, Isaac Albeniz, Enrique Granados, Joaquin Malats, Francisco Tarrega, Antonio Ruiz-Pipo
: :David Russell was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but his family moved to Spain while he was still a young boy so he could study music in the birthplace of classical guitar. On Reflections of Spain, Russell plays the music of his childhood home with all the joy you would expect from someone revisiting a beloved place. Russell's formidable technique is powered by a keen intelligence and tempered by an emotional delivery. He plays chestnuts like Tarrega's 'Recuerdos de la Alhambra' and Albeinez's 'Austurias' with a fond intimacy that rescues them from cliché. Perhaps the finest moments on the CD are Russell's guitar arrangements ... |
