Soul to Soul(more) »rank: 16930by: Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble
: essential recording:Guitar lovers will flip over this reissue's new bonus tracks: a conversation in which Stevie Ray Vaughan extols the virtues of Jimi Hendrix's playing and then essays them all in a medley of 'Little Wing/Third Stone From the Sun.' There's also the brief slide-guitar instrumental 'Slip Slidin' Slim.' What's breathtaking about these and the 10 remastered cuts that were the original 1985 album are the remarkably live amplifier tones. It sounds as though Vaughan's plugged directly into your stereo--especially at the climax of 'Little Wing,' where his Stratocaster feeds back through a wall of spinning Leslie speakers in a fit of ... |

: : Ben Harper Photos More from Ben Harper Welcome to the Cruel World Diamonds on the Inside Both Sides of the Gun Live From Mars Fight for Your Mind Live at the Hollywood Bowl Amazon.com:Jam Nation hero Ben Harper tones down his lap-slide guitar flash in favor of the holy spirit for this blend of originals and gospel classics, his first full-length album with the historic singing group. Latter Days: Best of Led Zeppelin, Vol.2(more) »rank: 42171by: Led Zeppelin
: :The glory days of Led Zeppelin are chronicled comprehensively in Atlantic Record's 1999 Early Days best-of set, which leaves this '73-to-'79 package shorter on obvious crowd-pleasers. Still, this secondary set shows just how powerful Zeppelin were at their zenith. Taken from the band's final four albums, the songs here--'No Quarter,' 'Houses of the Holy,' and 'Song Remains the Same' among them--brought audiences to their feet in stadiums across the world while the Zeppelin juggernaut trampled their competition underfoot. Zeppelin defined hard rock, but were also capable of a delicacy that's easy to overlook; indeed, that dimension is missing from the picture of Zep ... |

Balance(more) »rank: 51156by: Van Halen
: :No numeric or anagrammatic puns in the title of album #11, a sure sign that a new chapter is opening for these monsters of '80s rock. The band's formula has been polished to a blinding gleam here by producer Bruce Fairbairn, and there's a formidable mix of radio cuts (the first single 'Don't Tell Me,' 'Can't Stop Lovin' You'), boneheaded rawk numbers ('Amsterdam,' 'Big Fat Money') and towering, cinematic epics ('The Seventh Seal,' 'Feelin''). --Jeff Bateman |

Pilgrim(more) »rank: 11738by: Eric Clapton
: :Eric Clapton has metamorphosed from tie-dyed guitar god for a mostly male congregation to Armani-clad crooner and chart-certified ladies' man, yet it misses the point to focus on that transition without considering '90s forays into blues (on From The Cradle, his brilliant 1994 live-in-the-studio homage), techno, and the silky contemporary R&B of 'Change The World.' Pilgrim, his first studio album of new songs since Journeyman, reflects all these facets in his most ambitious, and certainly darkest solo project. Its title isn't casual: These are elliptical meditations on the ravages of time, as preoccupied with matters of the spirit as affairs of the heart. ... |

The real joy of the set, however, is nine NBA playoff games presented as they were originally broadcast and almost in their entirety. They last about 90-100 minutes with TV introductions and post-game interviews, but minus halftime, commercials, and some slower moments. The games include such absolute classics as the game in which rookie Magic Johnson started at center in place of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and the 1987 "baby hook" game against the Boston Celtics. If you're used to watching current NBA games you might be tempted to just skip to the end, but it's surprisingly rewarding to watch the game develop, to watch the game's superstars strut their stuff (or see a couple of 1972 reserves named Phil Jackson and Pat Riley), and to observe how radically the sport has changed over the years. Variable picture quality and technical glitches are unavoidable (even the 2002 game looks washed out), but this is the first time complete or nearly complete NBA games have been available in the home-video era, and they probably still look better than the VHS tapes you've been saving over the years. Yes, it'd be easy to argue about which games from the Lakers' long history should have been included, and the highlight videos don't have a ton of replay value, but the NBA Dynasty series is a major milestone in archived sports. --David Horiuchi
