: :Acappella is an excellent starting point for anyone looking to explore contemporary Christian vocal groups. Less jazzy than TakeĀ 6 and more lean and clean than the heavily multitracked Glad, Acappella provides a solid groove and tight harmonies that are fresh and exciting yet not overtly aimed at Top 40 radio. One of the tracks on Set Me Free, 'More Precious Than Gold,' was even used in a national television commercial for Kodak. That track, based on Psalm 19, was written by Keith Lancaster, as was the bulk of the album. The four singers on this 1993 album, Duane Adams, Wayburn Dean, Gary Moyers, ...

: :St John's English Choral Music series for Naxos (this Walton disc is No. 4) has won golden opinions (and an award or two), but there has been nothing better than this. With Christopher Robinson nearing the end of his reign in charge of this world-renowned choir, there could hardly be a better testament to his work. The likes of 'Drop, drop slow tears' and 'Set me as a seal' are standards for choirs up and down the land, but pieces such as the remarkable 'The Twelve' and 'Where does the uttered music go?' require a particular virtuosity, which is more than evident here. ...

by: Bobby McFerrin

: :The vocalist's 1984 solo album has proven in many ways to be the blueprint for the iconoclastic career to come. Following his more mainstream debut, 1982's Bobby McFerrin, The Voice is a daring idea: an unaccompanied, live solo vocal album. Although there's little here that augers the explicit interest in classical music that would later be apparent, The Voice showcases McFerrin's remarkable vocal abilities, unabashedly optimistic personality, and willingness to take risky ideas to their logical conclusion. The son of opera singers, McFerrin is grounded in the vocalese style of King Pleasure, Jon Hendricks and Eddie Jefferson, but is only nominally a jazz ...

: :A Child's Celebration of Classical Music, like its esteemed peers in the Music for Little People series, is not only of superior quality, it caters to the interest of kids without dumbing down the music. Beginning with the lively Boston Pops Orchestra rendition of 'In the Hall of the Mountain King,' this collection draws the listener into worlds created by orchestral majesty, powerful buildups, and exquisite narrative. Meryl Streep's buttery tones preface Ravel's magically ruminative 'Sleeping Beauty' and Carol Channing is simply marvelous in her telling of the giggle-inducing yarn of 'Gerald McBoing Boing,' as set to strings and drums, cymbal clashes, and ...

On their debut album, 1999's Something About Airplanes, Death Cab for Cutie proved there's a reason why Northwest music critics continue to sing their praises. The foursome combined the emo sounds of Modest Mouse and 764-Hero with an inventive, and often sly, sentimentality. It worked wonders, but still sounded a little too lo-fi. Luckily, on We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes the group has figured out all the production nuances that flawed that auspicious debut. The opening "Title Track" begins by sounding both crappy and shallow, but the band is merely pulling your leg; two minutes later, the tune expands into a gorgeous, well-produced masterpiece. The album never looks back. Ben Gibbard's songwriting continues to evolve--"Company Calls" segues into, what else, the slower "Company Calls Epilogue"--while the simple lyrics of "For What Reason" and "405" tell infectious stories that demand repeated listenings. Proof positive the Northwest is still churning out great music. --Jason Verlinde

The first Black Box Recorder album, 1998's England Made Me, was originally conceived by Auteurs and Baader Meinhof frontman Luke Haines as a typically baleful response to the cultural and political hysteria--respectively, Britpop and Tony Blair--then gripping Britain. Recorded with the help of former Jesus & Mary Chain drummer John Moore and singer Sarah Nixey, it did for Britpop roughly what the film Carrie did for the senior prom. The Facts of Life, the follow-up, maintains the withering glare but fixes it this time on the personal. The songs here obsess with unnerving clarity and mordant wit on the banal, cruel details of human relationships and are narrated perfectly by Nixey. Where her perfectly English-accented whisper infused England Made Me with the air of a bored aristocrat finding contemptuous amusement in the misery of others, on The Facts of Life she has located an edge of taunting viciousness all the more diabolical for being so understated. The tunes, as ever, are sweet and insidious, perhaps best thought of as Saint Etienne turned feral. Highlights on an album full of them are "English Motorway" and "The Art of Driving"--BBR triumphantly reclaiming the American rock & roll prerogative of the road song for their damp, claustrophobic homeland. The Facts of Life is a masterpiece. --Andrew Mueller
